Spades in the Ground at Sandylands
A brilliant moment of community pride was shared at Sandylands CP School as the Mayor of Lancaster joined pupils to mark the first dig for a new allotment and eco-garden behind Seahorse Nursery. The project, shaped by children’s ideas and rooted in outdoor learning, will grow into a space for food, wildlife and wellbeing as the years go by. Our Chief Officer Yakub Patel and Nick Smith, Operations Manager, were also there to celebrate alongside the school community, with thanks shared to West End Morecambe Big Local and Lancashire County Council for making this pupil-led vision possible.

Lancaster Guardian Column
Lancaster District CVS writes a column for the Lancaster Guardian every two weeks, which offers an opportunity for us to focus on anything and everything related to our sector and the work being done in communities across Lancaster. Whether it’s a good news story celebrating success, a call for volunteers, highlighting a project or need, or anything in between and beyond, we want to hear from you. What stories do you have that deserve attention? What do you want the people of Lancaster to read about?
The column must be 380-400 words so we need ideas and suggestions that would fill the space. Provide use with the information and we’ll write it up and submit it. Quotes from relevant people are always appreciated, and if you can also provide us with a decent photograph, the Lancaster Guardian will also put the column on their website (all columns appear on our own CVS website).

VCSFE Solo Workers Wellbeing and Peer Support Group
Starting Wednesday 4th March at 4.00pm, Lancaster District CVS is launching a new monthly wellbeing session designed specifically for solo workers across the Voluntary, Community, Faith and Social Enterprise (VCSFE) sector.
Many managers, activity coordinators and project officers often find themselves working in isolation, juggling wide-ranging responsibilities, or carrying the emotional weight of supporting people with complex needs. These roles can be demanding, sometimes stressful, and can leave individuals without the peer support or space they need to reflect, offload, or simply connect with others who truly understand their challenges.
These relaxed, agenda-free sessions will take place at the CVS office in the Cornerstone and will offer a friendly, informal environment with refreshments, conversation, and a safe place to share experiences. Participants will also have the opportunity to shape future wellbeing activities such as group walks, social events, or other supportive ideas that emerge.
This initiative is being trialled to explore whether there’s a wider need for ongoing support of this kind. While we’re beginning on Wednesday afternoons, the format and timing may evolve based on what works best for those attending.
Interested in coming along? You can just turn up at the CVS Office at The Cornerstone, Sulyard Street, Lancaster LA1 PX from 4.00pm Wednesday 4th March. We’ll be there until 5.30pm.
Not sure whether the session is right for you and want to ask some questions? Contact Sharon, Development Support Officer on 01524 555900 or via email – [email protected]

Opportunities for Volunteering from Home
Do you have any volunteering roles that can be done from home? We would like to increase the number of options that are available for people who either cannot, or would prefer not to, go out to volunteer.
This can include people with disabilities; people who are challenged by anxiety, depression, or other mental wellbeing issues; people with short-term illness or injury that prevents them from going out; people who are isolating because of some other health related issue; or perhaps just people who want to do something but would find it more convenient to work from home.
Roles that could be done from home could include things like administration, finance, social media, marketing and promotion, telephone befriending etc and often would only require minimal equipment, such as a computer and an internet connection.
Please contact [email protected] with your volunteering needs. We have volunteers waiting for home-based roles, so there is potential for a quick referral.

The Importance of a Will and of Power of Attorney
Having a will allows you to protect those close to you and ensures your wishes are followed after your death, preventing any disagreements about who takes what. If you die without a will, “intestacy” will arise – this means the law decides what happens to your assets, and this can cause problems for your family and add to the costs of probate.
A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that gives authority to another person to act on your behalf. It prevents a stranger, or someone you don’t trust, from having this power. Without an LPA, if you become ill and/or cannot make your own decisions, your loved ones (including your spouse or partner) must apply to a court for these powers – adding significant cost and time.
The session will be led by Nicola Combe of Morecambe Bay Wills. Advice will be impartial and based on Nicola’s personal experience (which is why she founded the company) and on that of her clients.
25 February, 6:30pm – 8pm, The Cornerstone (Sulyard Street, Lancaster LA1 1PX), free of charge.

Lancashire Drug Alert: Please Share Widely!
Partners across Lancaster and Morecambe are being asked to spread the word following a serious drug alert issued in late January. Three deaths in the last ten days have been linked to heroin contaminated with Nitazenes, a powerful synthetic opioid that dramatically increases overdose risk and is now appearing in street drugs and fake prescriptions. The message is clear and urgent: naloxone does work on Nitazenes and fentanyl, using alone increases danger and rapid help can save lives. Inspire Lancashire is on hand to provide naloxone, test strips and fast access to treatment, and they are encouraging anyone working with people at risk to share this information.
