Lancaster Guardian Column
Lancaster District CVS writes a column for the Lancaster Guardian every two weeks, which offers an opportunity for us to focus on anything and everything related to our sector and the work being done in communities across Lancaster. Whether it’s a good news story celebrating success, a call for volunteers, highlighting a project or need, or anything in between and beyond, we want to hear from you. What stories do you have that deserve attention? What do you want the people of Lancaster to read about?
The column must be 380-400 words so we need ideas and suggestions that would fill the space. Provide use with the information and we’ll write it up and submit it. Quotes from relevant people are always appreciated, and if you can also provide us with a decent photograph, the Lancaster Guardian will also put the column on their website (all columns appear on our own CVS website).

Local Government Reorganisation update
The Government is reviewing how local councils are structured through Local Government Reorganisation (LGR). This could see the current county and district council system replaced by new unitary councils, each responsible for all local services.
Currently, Lancashire County Council delivers services such as social care, education and highways, while district councils are responsible for areas including housing, planning and leisure. Blackpool Council and Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council already operate as unitary authorities.
Five different reorganisation proposals for Lancashire were submitted to Government in November, ranging from two to five new unitary councils. These proposals are now being assessed.
For VCSE organisations, LGR could affect:
– who commissions or funds services
– how partnerships and contracts are managed
– where decisions about local priorities are made
A statutory public consultation is open for seven weeks from Thursday 5 February, mainly via an online questionnaire. VCSE organisations are encouraged to engage, as the outcome may shape future commissioning, partnership arrangements and local decision-making. Support to complete the questionnaire is available in all Lancashire libraries.
For more information including the link to the online questionnaire.

Could You Be a Magistrate?
Many of the legal decisions in England and Wales are made by volunteer magistrates, ordinary members of the public who bring fairness, sound judgement and a strong sense of community to the courts. No legal qualifications are needed, just the ability to listen carefully, weigh up different perspectives and make balanced decisions. Magistrates volunteer for at least 13 days a year plus training, sit alongside two fellow volunteers with support from a legal adviser, and can serve in the adult criminal, family or youth courts. Full training is provided and reasonable expenses can be claimed. Applications are welcomed from people aged 18 to 74 from all backgrounds who want to represent and strengthen their local communities.

Opportunities for Volunteering from Home
Do you have any volunteering roles that can be done from home? We would like to increase the number of options that are available for people who either cannot, or would prefer not to, go out to volunteer.

Roles that could be done from home could include things like administration, finance, social media, marketing and promotion, telephone befriending etc and often would only require minimal equipment, such as a computer and an internet connection.
Please contact [email protected] with your volunteering needs. We have volunteers waiting for home-based roles, so there is potential for a quick referral.

Following discussions with the Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board, referrals for Autism and ADHD assessments will continue to be accepted until the end of March while longer term arrangements are worked through. For now it is very much business as usual, with services continuing to screen and triage new referrals. While this offers some short term stability, partners are clear that long waiting times remain a real concern for many families and conversations are continuing as plans for the future are developed.

Scottish Sounds Land in Morecambe
Morecambe’s More Music has teamed up with Scotland Introducing to welcome two outstanding Scottish acts to the town on Saturday 14th March. Constant Follower, the atmospheric project led by Stirling songwriter Stephen McAll, bring their meditative and deeply textured sound, with their debut album Neither Is, Nor Ever Was having been shortlisted for the 2022 Scottish Album of the Year. Joining them are The Firelight Trio, whose vibrant European repertoire moves effortlessly from Swedish polskas and Scottish reels to French waltzes, klezmer and dazzling original compositions.
The artists were selected through Scotland Introducing, a new initiative organised by Showcase Scotland Expo that connects Scottish musicians with venues across England, opening up new touring pathways and audiences for folk, traditional, world and acoustic artists. As Ben McCabe from More Music reflects, the selection process offered a rich menu of talent and an exciting glimpse into the breadth of Scotland’s contemporary music scene, with more collaborations hoped for in the future.
Date: Saturday 14th March
Location: More Music, Morecambe
