LDCVS Annual General Meeting – 22 February at 1pm
Our next Annual General Meeting will take place on Thursday 22 February 2024, starting at 1pm. We’ll be holding the meeting online, via Teams. Use this link to join, or download this calendar file to add the event and Teams link to your own calendar.
The meeting is open to anyone who would like to learn more about our work and meet our staff and board. We will be reporting on our activities and financial performance for the year ending 30 June 2023, as well as conducting business relating to the appointment of trustees and auditors.

We’d like to thank everyone who came along (in the words of talented poet-in-residence Nathan Parker) “through the dreary November drizzle” to network and explore at FestiVOL 2023. The More Music building was buzzing the whole day long and they were wonderful hosts alongside The Exchange for our second annual celebration of the voluntary sector.
The event really showcased the vibrant tapestry of our district, demonstrating the power of community spirit and dedication.

Your organisation can receive free unrestricted funding from online retailers including Sainsbury’s, eBay, Tesco, M&S, Asda, Argos, Just Eat, Morrisons, Trainline and booking.com. They will all donate money to your voluntary organisation when your community of supporters shop with them.
Whenever an online shopper buys something online, the retailer will send your organisation either a flat monetary amount or a percentage of what the online shopper spends, without it costing the shopper anything extra. 24% of people shop online twice a week now so this is a simple way for your supporter network to raise money for your organisation during the cost of living crisis. All types of community organisations can receive this funding – your organisation just needs to be registered with funding website easyfundraising.

Barclays Community Football Fund 2024 Opens to UK Applications on 12 February
Barclays Bank, in collaboration with the Sported Foundation, is offering grants of up to £1,000 to not-for-profit organisations for football activities targeting young people under 25 from underrepresented groups, with a focus on high-deprivation areas. The funding, now in its third year, aims to enhance access to football for women and girls, those with disabilities, racially diverse communities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and lower socio-economic groups. Additional grants and support include deep impact grants, coaching grants, and access to training and resources. The funding cannot be used for educational institutions, elite football programs, or multiple projects within the same organization. Two funding rounds are scheduled for 2024.
Applications for the first round open on 12 February and close on 12 April 2024.

New National Lottery Heritage Grants Accepting Applications from Across the UK
The National Lottery Heritage Grants, part of the Heritage 2033 strategy, will invest £3.6 billion across the UK, offering grants from £10,000 up to £10 million. Projects focusing on saving heritage, protecting the environment, inclusion, and sustainability are supported. Grants are available for projects up to five years, catering to various aspects of UK heritage.
Applications are open year-round for grants ranging from £10,000 to £250,000, with decisions made in about two months. Expressions of Interest are required for grants over £250,000, with quarterly deadlines for development phase applications. Chief Executive Eilish McGuinness encourages applications from organisations aiming to preserve and share the UK’s heritage.
Applications for grants of between £10,000 and £250,000 are open all year round with decisions in about two months.

Esmée Fairbairn Foundation Announces £1m Youth-Led Creativity Funding Programme
The programme has been co-designed with Esmée’s Involving Young People Collective. A panel of young consultants will play a key role in the assessment process for the Fund that ensuring the views and voices of young people are at the heart of the programme. The Youth-Led Creativity programme builds on young people’s power to make change, use creativity to enhance their lives, develop their careers, and influence the world around them. Support focuses on work led by and for young people who have less access to creative programmes or who are underrepresented in arts and culture.
This includes young people who:
- are D/deaf, disabled or neurodivergent
- are from communities experiencing racial inequity
- are economically or educationally disadvantaged
- identify as LGBT+
- have migration or care experience

Innovation and Improvement In Health and Care – Initial Deadline Extended
The Sir Jules Thorn Charitable Trust offers a limited number of substantial grants to registered charities, exempt charities in the UK, and NHS organisations to further innovation and advancements in health and care services. Grants range from £150,000 to £500,000, with projects required to demonstrate potential for improved outcomes, enhanced access, or increased resilience in health services. Priority is given to scalable or replicable projects addressing serious long-term conditions, service integration, or unmet needs. Funding can cover infrastructure, project costs, and staffing necessary for implementing innovative practices, with the initial step being a call with Trust staff to initiate the application process.
The first step in the application process is to book a call with the Trust’s staff.
Appointments are currently available until 16 February 2024 (an extension from 31 January).

Funding to Support UK and International Collaborative Arts Projects
The British Council is offering grants of between £25,000 and £75,000 for arts and culture organisations across the UK to work in partnership with international organisations from selected countries to support arts projects that help artists to make and develop creative artwork and encourage new international partnerships and innovative ways of collaborating.
With £1 million available in the second round of the International Collaboration Grants Programme, projects can cover various artistic fields such as film, literature, visual arts, music, and more. Priority will be given to partnerships building genuine international collaboration and benefiting artists and partners.
The deadline for applications is 30 April 2024 (23:59).

Landaid Move-On Programme
Landaid’s23-02-2024 Move-On Grants Programme aims to unlock bed spaces in private or social, rental sector. These bed spaces will be for move-on accommodation. Grants for organisations working with young people (16-25 year olds) who are ready and wanting to move forward into independent living, but face barriers in accessing rental accommodation. Supports young people who are, are at risk of, or who have experienced homelessness. This does not have to be the exclusive focus of your organisation’s work.

Hedley Foundation
The Hedley Foundation provides grants to smaller charities operating across the spectrum of social need. They support hundreds of small charities, improving lives and lifting people’s aspirations. Grants of 250 to 5,000 Funding streams: Youth Support, Disabled Support, Supporting the elderly and Terminally Ill, Miscellaneous support. The Foundation now provides charitable support to young people, in particular, and to those who are disadvantaged and vulnerable.

Henry Moore Foundation Accepting Applications for First 2024 Funding Round
Henry Moore Foundation is offering various grants of up to £20,000 for art galleries, museums, and other not-for-profit organisations concerned with art and art history across the UK to support projects that promote the growth and development of sculpture across historical, modern and contemporary registers, and research that expands the appreciation of sculpture.
Funding is available for new projects, acquisitions, research and development, as well as conferences, lectures, and publications related to sculpture. Grants range from small research grants of up to £2,500 to larger grants of up to £20,000 for various initiatives. The Foundation typically has four deadlines per year for grant applications.
The next deadline for applications is 1 March 2024, 11pm.

Energy Redress Scheme – Main Fund and Small Project Fund Reopen for Applications
The Energy Redress Scheme is open for its seventh funding round, offering £20 million across four streams. Charities and community groups in England, Scotland, and Wales can apply for grants to aid vulnerable households, develop innovative energy solutions, and reduce carbon emissions. Graham Ayling and Cathryn Scott encourage applications, stressing the scheme’s impact on communities and commitment to customer protection. Over £100 million has been awarded to 535 projects since 2018.
The deadline for applications is February 20, 2024, with pre-registration required.

Funding to Empower Young People through Language and Storytelling in Northwest England
Audible, in partnership with thinkBeyond, is offering grants of up to £15,000 for local organisations across Northwest England to deliver projects and activities that help to unlock the potential of underprivileged 16-to-25-year-olds, whose exclusion has historically hurt their levels of literacy and aspiration. The fund seeks initiatives engaging youth in language to boost literacy and career aspirations.
Applications run from January 31 to March 17, prioritizing new projects targeting eligible youth within six months of funding. Assistance is available for uncertain applicants.

Subsidised Stays at Rookhow for Community Groups
ROOKHOW, a Quaker charity nestled in the serene Rusland Valley near Ulverston in South Lakes, offers a tranquil retreat featuring a 16-bed bunkbarn, a historic Meeting House for group gatherings, a heated yurt in the woods, and two campfires spread across 12 acres of enchanting oak woodland. The Retreat Away Fund provides support for community groups, including LGBTQ+ youth groups, refugees, trauma and addiction support groups, mental health organisations, and families on low incomes, enabling them to experience the rejuvenating ambiance of Rookhow. Over the past three years, more than 500 individuals from 40 different organisations have benefited from the fund, sharing heartfelt experiences of solace and renewal.
The deadline for the next round of applications is April 1st.

The Better Community Business Networks Grant Initiative
The Better Community Business Network’s grant initiative aims to provide small third-sector grant awards to empower charities and local community projects. This initiative will distribute a one-off grant award of up to £3,000 per charity or to small but credible community projects, which are able to demonstrate their positive impact on the communities they aim to serve.

Impetus Seeks Two Partners to Improve School Engagement and/or Reduce Exclusions
Impetus and the Henry Smith Charity seek two impact-driven not-for-profit organisations to join their Engage Fund that focusing on improving school engagement and reducing exclusions, or enhancing outcomes for excluded children. Selected partners will receive £100,000 in core funding annually for two years, along with hands-on support from the Impetus Investment Team, access to pro bono experts, peer learning forums, and co-investment opportunities. Priority is given to organisations committed to improving outcomes in areas such as school attendance, exclusions, attainment, and post-school destinations, with particular interest in those working directly with schools or employing a place-based approach.
The deadline to complete the online eligibility form is 16 February 2024 (midnight).

Paul Hamlyn Foundation to Pause Shared Ground Fund
The Shared Ground Fund is evolving to better align with the needs and aspirations of those advocating for migrant justice. After extensive consultations with migrants and stakeholders, the Foundation will temporarily pause the Fund to implement changes and prepare for its re-launch in early spring 2024. During this period, new applications or enquiries won’t be accepted, but individuals can register their interest for future opportunities on the Foundation’s website. Grateful for the invaluable input received, the Foundation anticipates reopening with clearer criteria and a streamlined application process.
The fund won’t be able to accept new applications or enquiry calls to the Shared Ground Fund from Friday 9 February (11:59pm) through early spring 2024.

Austin and Hope Pilkington Trust Opens for First Round of 2024
UK registered charities or organisations that are exempt from registration in the UK can apply during the month of February for a grant of £1,000. The Trust operates a three-year rotation system, with different fields of interests being funded each year. During this round, the focus is on disability, specifically employment and training for people living with disabilities to ensure better access.
Charities must have an operating income of between £100,000 and £1 million to apply. There are normally four application rounds per year with applications accepted for one month only, usually in February, April, July and September. Charities can only apply for one round per calendar year.
Round 1 opens on 1 February and closes on 28 February 2024.

Boots Charitable Trust
Boots Charitable Trust, an independent registered charity wholly funded by Boots UK Limited, is dedicated to supporting local communities across the UK. In 2023, the Trust expanded its reach beyond its home county of Nottinghamshire to fund projects nationwide. Focusing on health, lifelong learning, community development, and social care, the Trust encourages applications from charities and voluntary organisations. Grants of up to £10,000 are provided to organisations where the impact can be most significant, aligning with the Trust’s commitment to caring for people, customers, and communities.

British Ecological Society Outreach Grants
The British Ecological Society are providing Outreach and Engagement Grants that aim to support BES members in conducting independent outreach, public engagement, and science communication activities that connect public audiences with the significance of ecological science. The grants, with amounts up to £2,000, are open to individuals, teams, and organisations at all experience levels, developing diverse and innovative approaches, including in-person events, digital formats, or physical resources.
Application process: There will be two funding rounds in 2024:
- Round 1 opens on 11 January and closes on 8 March 2024 with notification in late May 2024.
- Round 2 opens on 11 July and closes on 11 September 2024 with notification in late November 2024.

Charles Plater Trust’s Annual Large Grants Open for Applications
The Charles Plater Trust are offering grants ranging from £5,001 to £60,000 to local charities with an annual income below £10 million in England and Wales. The Trust supports projects promoting social justice through education in its broadest sense. Focused on three types of change—individual, organisational, and societal—the grants aim to bring significant positive impact to marginalised individuals, enhance organisational capacity, and contribute to social or systemic change. The funding covers project revenue costs for activities related to Leadership for Laypeople, Social Action, and Applied Research. Collaborative applications aligned with Catholic Social Teaching principles are encouraged, irrespective of the applicant’s religious affiliation.

Thomas Wall Trust Accepting UK Applications for Summer 2024 Meeting
Grants of up to £5,000 are available for UK registered charities for specific projects that improve communication skills for disadvantaged adults and supports NEET people into employment.
The Trust views communication skills as critical capabilities for people who want to improve their employment prospects, self-confidence, resilience, and life chances.
The funding is for registered UK registered charities with an annual turnover of between £25,000 and £500,000 that are working to develop communication skills for people from disadvantaged groups who want to improve their employment prospects. Beneficiaries must gain at least one accredited vocational qualification during delivery.
There is a two-stage application process. The next deadline to submit a first stage application is 29 April 2024 for assessment at the July 2024 meeting.

Black and Racially Minoritised-Led Groups Can Apply Now for Flexible Finance
The Flexible Finance Fund, a collaboration between Social Investment Business, The Ubele Initiative, and Create Equity, aims to provide £4 million in funding and support to 15-25 Black and Racially Minoritised charities and social enterprises in England. The initiative supports organisations dedicated to improving people’s lives or their environment.
The funding package includes flexible grants, support, and loans from the Government’s Recovery Loan Fund. The funding is unrestricted, allowing organisations to utilise it for various community-benefiting purposes, such as hiring staff, undertaking building projects, or expanding capacity through new initiatives. The fund encompasses individuals outside the category of ‘White British,’ covering diverse ethnic backgrounds.
There are no deadlines. Applications can be made at any time.

Funding to Support the Conservation of Rural Historic Buildings
The Historic Houses Foundation is offering grants of up to £250,000 to support organisations in England and Wales involved in the repair of rural historic buildings, including gardens, grounds, and outbuildings where applicable. Projects eligible for funding should demonstrate a compelling need for work within the next two to three years, enhance the historic environment, ensure appropriate public access, exhibit financial need for the grant, proceed within a reasonable timeframe, and have a sustainable conservation and/or business plan.
The buildings or structures must be listed, but grants involving unlisted structures, particularly in conservation areas, may be considered. Eligible organisations should be legally responsible for repairing buildings, garden, and grounds. Grants ranging from £1,000 to £250,000 are available, with larger awards granted in exceptional circumstances.
Applications can be submitted at any time.

Naturewatch Foundation Launches New Pet Rescue Grant for UK
The Pet Rescue Grant is a new fund provided and administered by Naturewatch Foundation, a registered animal welfare charity whose mission is to end animal cruelty and advance animal welfare standards. The Foundation is offering £5,000 to help frontline animal welfare services in the UK to provide a second chance to pets who have been exploited for profit.
UK registered charities and Community Interest Companies (CICs) registered with the Companies House can apply. Priority will be given to projects by smaller organisations that may not have the time or resources to apply to larger funding bodies.
At least £5,000 will be made available each year. One or more organisations may be selected to receive a grant each year.
The grant can be used for things such as:
- Veterinary care.
- Behavioural support.
- Specialist facilities or equipment.
- Training for personnel
The 2024 application window opens on 24 January and closes on 21 February 2024.

PRS Foundation Launches Talent Development Network to Support UK Music Initiatives
The Talent Development Network aims to support and unite frontline organisations involved in talent development for music creators across the UK. Organisations selected for the network will have access to grant support, with funding of up to £25,000 per year available for Phase 1 of the initiative (2024-27). Multi-year funding will be considered based on demonstrated creative, career, and professional outcomes.
Selection criteria include the quality and diversity of opportunities offered in the region, nation, genre, or music specialisation, as well as the year-round impact on supported music creators. Decisions will also be based on what organisations can contribute to the Network, with an expectation that Network members will actively collaborate with PRS Foundation, partners and other Network members.
Deadline: Monday 26 February 2024, 6pm.

Nature Computes Better: UK Opportunity Seed Funding Call Invites Applications
Funding is available to support projects based on bold ideas that challenge assumptions, open up new research paths, or provide steps towards new capabilities by means of scientific and technological breakthroughs.
The Nature Computes Better funding call is provided by the Advanced Research and Innovation Agency (ARIA). Created by an Act of Parliament, and sponsored by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, ARIA funds projects across the full spectrum of R&D disciplines, approaches and institutions.
In this call, ARIA is seeking to fund high potential proposals with between £10,000 and £500,000 each. ARIA initially expects to fund up to 10 opportunity seeds in this space.
The deadline for Round 1 applications is 19 February 2024, 4pm.

Open Societal Challenges Programme
The Open Societal Challenges Programme at the Open University is running a competition open to UK Charities to find the most exciting research ideas tackling real-world problems.
Winning Challenges will be assigned to an OU Research Team to take on the research idea and will receive a baseline of £25,000 in research funding. Winning Charities will be invited to co-design the specifics of the research project with the research team, and to contribute their perspective, knowledge, and experiences to the project. The winning Charity will also receive an optional paid internship for one of its employees, trustees, or volunteers with the research team to help build research capacity (hybrid or in-person).

Funding for Cultural Organisations to Improve Digital Infrastructure Across the UK
Bloomberg Philanthropies is providing grants of up to £150,000 over two years through the Digital Accelerator Programme. Cultural organisations with at least three years of operation and a turnover of £500,000 in the 2023 financial year can apply. The funding aims to enhance digital infrastructure for content creation, customer relationship management, digital archives, and website upgrades. Eligible costs include hardware, software, staff time, and training. The initiative seeks to help organisations boost revenue, engage audiences, and improve operations.

Funding to Develop Volunteering Infrastructure in Health and Care Systems Across England
CW+, in collaboration with NHS Charities Together and NHS England, is providing grants ranging from £150,000 to £500,000 over three years through the Volunteering for Health Programme. The funding supports partnerships of NHS and VCSE organizations aiming to enhance volunteering infrastructure, ultimately improving the experience and outcomes of individuals in health and care systems.
Projects should contribute to outcomes such as better integration of volunteering, support for health and care priorities, improved volunteer experiences, and the sharing of innovative approaches. Eligible organizations include NHS trusts, ICBs, and VCSE entities. The application process involves multiple phases, including initial development grants for successful Phase One applicants.
The deadline to submit a Phase One application is 23 February 2024.

Eric Wright Charitable Trust 2024
Once again, Lancaster District CVS is working with the Eric Wright Charitable Trust to distribute grants of up to £500 to community organisations with an annual income below £50,000. Projects simply need to show how they can make a positive difference to the lives and wellbeing of people of any age.
Unlike previous years, there are no fixed application deadlines. Apply for funding at any time up until midnight on 31 July, and we’ll let you know the result by the middle of the following month. For example, all organisations who submit an application before midnight on 31 January will find out whether or not they have a grant in the middle of February, February applicants will find out in March, and so on until the fund is entirely allocated.

Funding to Promote Visual and Performance Arts Across the UK
Jerwood Foundation is providing grants of up to £2 million per year to support UK organizations promoting visual and performance arts for public benefit and nurturing emerging talent in the arts. The funding is available for projects and activities lasting between three and 12 months. Past recipients include Brixton Chamber Orchestra, The Courtauld, Paintings in Hospitals, Persona Arts, and Arnolfini, supporting various art-related initiatives and exhibitions.

VCSE Energy Efficiency Scheme – Programme Guidance
The VCSE Energy Efficiency Scheme, supported by the Department for Culture, Media, and Sport, aids voluntary, community, and social enterprise organizations in enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability. Available until August 2024, the scheme offers Independent Energy Assessments (IEAs) and Capital Grants, assisting eligible organizations in reducing energy costs and improving services. IEAs involve comprehensive assessments to identify potential savings, while Capital Grants fund energy-saving installations aligned with IEA findings. VSVR 2024 – Call for Papers – Voice of the People? Democracy, Representation and Involvement
The Voluntary Sector and Volunteering Research Conference 2024, organised by the Voluntary Sector Studies Network (VSSN), in partnership with Voluntary Action Islington (VAI) and the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), invites submissions for papers, panel sessions, and workshops. The conference aims to explore the role of the voluntary sector in democracy, representation, and involvement, amidst challenges such as technological advancements and alternative forms of citizen engagement. It welcomes contributions from various disciplines and sectors, addressing themes like diversity, recent crises, grassroots action, and organisational management.

Landlord’s Forum
If you’re a landlord of private rented housing in the Lancaster District, Lancaster City Council would like to invite you to a Landlord Forum taking place later this month. The aim of the Forum is to bring together landlords and agents from around the district to talk about a range of topics so that landlords feel better informed. This event will focus on the housing crisis in Lancaster district, supply and demand, and moving forward post pandemic.

3R Foundation Celebrates it’s First Year!
The 3R Foundation Charity Shop is celebrating its first birthday in Carnforth, and what a year it’s been! Originally aiming to repay setup costs and distribute £10,000 in grants, the shop has exceeded expectations, awarding £38,000 to 63 local charities, clubs, and community groups. This success is attributed to the overwhelming support from the community and the dedication of volunteers and staff. For more details on the grants awarded, visit their website. NIHR North West – Social Care and Social Work Research Briefing
The Winter Research Briefing presents an exciting opportunity for social workers and care practitioners to enhance their research skills through Round 4 of the Pre-doctoral Local Authority Fellowships (PLAF). This fellowship provides funding for a year to develop a PhD Fellowship application, offering a bespoke training program while retaining existing salaries.
Additionally, the briefing highlights other NIHR funding calls, upcoming events such as World Social Work Day, and ongoing research initiatives across various institutions. It aims to engage social care professionals in contributing to policy research and improving the evidence base for adult social care.

Community Conversation: Disability Access
Join the community conversation on “Disability Access” in the Lancaster district at Lancaster University Management School. Participants will discuss barriers to access in the Lancaster District, focusing on Transport, Buildings (public and private), Attitudes, and Environmental access. The identified issues will inform future campaigns. The venue, equipped with disabled parking and accessible by bus, is partnered with organisations such as the NHS, LDCVS, RNIB, and more. Refreshments are provided, and the event is free to attend.

Free Guide on Sexual Harassment Prevention – 10 Key Steps for Employers
The new Worker Protection Act, receiving Royal Assent on October 26, 2023, is set to come into force in October 2024. This legislation introduces a proactive duty for all employers to take “reasonable steps” to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. QED training services provide a Free Guide which outlines 10 steps to help employers meet this duty, creating a workplace free from harassment, promoting respect and inclusivity, and cultivating an open culture. Additional free resources, including case studies, PowerPoint slides on advertisements, and insights on managing social events, are available upon request.

Befriend a Local Young Person in Care
Nyas (National Youth Advocacy Service) are looking for Volunteer Independent Visitors who will take a young person who is in care out for a ‘fun’ visit once a month for a minimum of two years. An Independent Visitor is a volunteer who befriends and develops a long-term friendship with a young person in care.
This can involve helping young people develop new interests, skills and hobbies or going on outings such as to the cinema, bowling or just a walk in the park. Becoming an Independent Visitor can be very rewarding for you and life changing for a young person in care, being a consistent and supportive person in their life, helping them learn to trust, have fun and grow.

SAFE’s Prop Up Project Session Volunteer
An opportunity has arisen to help support young adults, aged 20-25, facing challenges related to mental health and wellbeing at SAFE’s Prop Up Project. Your role involves facilitating creative activities, encouraging participation, and encouraging social interactions among attendees. Volunteers will prepare sessions, assist during activities, and contribute ideas for engaging sessions. New Maternity and Neonatal Independent Role will Support Families in Lancashire and South Cumbria
A new maternity and neonatal independent advocate role has been established to support families in Lancashire and South Cumbria, ensuring their voices are heard and acted upon by care providers in cases of adverse outcomes during maternity or neonatal care. This advocate can assist families in navigating the healthcare system, attending meetings, and supporting them through investigations and complaints processes.
Initially serving Blackpool Teaching Hospitals and University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, this role aims to provide vital support during difficult times. Co-produced with input from service users and staff, the advocate operates independently from NHS Trusts and reports to the Integrated Care Board.
If you have experienced a serious incident or an adverse outcome that has or may require formal investigation following maternity or neonatal care, you may be able to get support from a Maternity and Neonatal Independent Senior Advocate.

Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Training
PAC Training and Empowerment is offering a free Youth Mental Health First Aid Course funded by Lancashire County Council. The course equips participants with the skills to recognize signs of mental ill-health and respond appropriately. Previous attendees commend the engaging activities and valuable insights gained. For those unable to commit to the two-day course, a half-day Youth Mental Health Aware course is available. Additionally, PAC offers courses on Adult Mental Health First Aid, safeTALK, and ASIST. Participants receive certification from MHFA England or Living Works. The initiative aims to increase mental health awareness and support individuals within the Lancashire area.

Measles Preparedness Information Document
The NHS have circulated Measles Campaign Information and Q&A for the Community, Voluntary & Faith Sector highlighting the importance of measles vaccination and addressing common concerns. Measles is highly contagious, especially among the unvaccinated, and can lead to serious complications. The campaign emphasises the necessity of two doses of the MMR vaccine for lifelong protection.
With recent outbreaks and declining vaccination rates, the NHS is launching a catch-up campaign for children aged 6 to 11 years. It assures the public of the vaccine’s safety and efficacy, including halal options without pork ingredients. The campaign also dispels the debunked link between the MMR vaccine and autism while advising travelers to ensure vaccination before international trips to countries where measles is prevalent.

3 Bridges 10k
Have you started running and maybe been involved in Parkruns and would like a new challenge? Then why not enter the popular 3 Bridges 10k on Sunday 14th April at 11am from the Lancaster & Morecambe AC clubhouse at Salt Ayre Leisure Centre. This race draws participants from across the north-west region. Many view it as an ideal warm-up for spring marathons and other extended races. Additionally, it caters well to novice runners who may be progressing from Parkruns to tackle longer distances.
Still low entry fees – only £14 for members of running clubs and £16 for non-members. An extra £3 for entries on the day. A really great medal for all finishers included.

Health Coaching Skills Training and Attendance Bursary
Lancaster District CVS are offering bursaries for VCFSE staff and volunteers to attend a two day face-to-face accredited health coaching skills training course. The course aims to upskill individuals so they can have better conversations and support people to reach their self-identified goals.
The course is for people who perform roles where they have the opportunity to support people to make behavioural changes that will encourage improved health and wellbeing. It will provide a range of tools and techniques that will help structure conversations to help individuals set and work towards goals that are important to them, whether this is about lifestyle changes that will promote better health and wellbeing or being better able to manage long term conditions.
VCFSE organisations which would like help to enable their staff or volunteers to access this training can apply to Lancaster District CVS for an attendance bursary. This is to help cover the costs of time taken to attend the course. The bursary totals £175 which will be paid to the organisation’s bank account once both days of the course have been completed.
To take advantage of the bursary, your organisation must first secure a place on a course.

Participants that have sent a fully completed form will be registered on a first-come, first-served basis for each course. They will receive a confirmation email, followed by further information with full joining instructions.

Forward your confirmation email to Jenny Reddell at [email protected] , who will allocate and confirm a bursary. Like the courses, bursaries will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis until they have all been distributed.
Once your two-day course is complete, your trainer will forward the attendance register to CVS and Jenny will get in touch with details about how the bursary will paid.

North West Childhood Immunisation Pilot Campaign
The UK Health Security Agency, NHS and DHSC are introducing a campaign that supports efforts to increase uptake of childhood immunisations among 0-5-year-olds.
The campaign will run across the North West region in March and April, with additional focus on the areas of lowest vaccine uptake and within identified ethnic minority groups less likely to take up the vaccine offer.
Messaging will stress the importance of vaccinations and help parents to make informed decisions, and support the ongoing and dedicated work in our region to ensure children are protected against infections that can cause serious harm.

There are several Warm and Welcome Spaces in the Lancaster District including new initiatives in from Marketgate Shopping Centre who have joined hands with Lancaster Against Loneliness, providing warm drinks and chats every Monday, 1pm-3pm. Supported by Age UK Lancashire, St Thomas’ Church, and The Friendship Centre Lancaster. Gregson Centre introduces a warm hub offering free hot drinks, drop-in sessions, and community support from Lancaster City Council. An 8-week course based on CBT principles to help people with their mental health.

This term offers a variety of activities planned including craft groups, a book club, a pamper morning, a monthly trip out (this term include visits to Yew Tree Barn, Low Newton), and Cook-along sessions where you’ll learn to cook something healthy, new and on a budget and then eat together afterwards too.

Cooking on a Budget
Learning how to cook healthy and affordable meals. The 6 week course includes how to cook soup, pasta, meat, chicken (or vegetarian/vegan alternatives), pastry and then the last week you’ll have a free choice week that ends with a fun cooking competition.
Celebrate Recovery (12 step Programme):
Providing weekly support for anyone struggling with any of life’s hurts, hang-ups and habits (not just addiction). Participants can find help with trauma, depression, bereavement, divorce, low self-esteem, anxiety – the list of issues is very varied.

Break the Mould Evaluator
In 2023, the Francis Scott Trust celebrated 60 years of supporting work with young people. To mark this milestone year, they asked that a group of local young people to distribute funds on the Trust’s behalf. Young people from across the Trust’s beneficiary area of Cumbria and Lancaster District were invited to design a grants programme and distribute £60,000 throughout 2023 that would benefit other local young people via their organised groups to support activities that are important to them.
To help us document the impact of a pilot initiative, Cumbria Youth Alliance and Lancaster District CVS are seeking an experienced interviewer and evaluator to work with a small group of young people and staff from the Break the Mould project. To gather the information, CYA and LDCVS will support the professional to set up a series of informal meetings with young people and staff from the project.

Healthwatch Lancashire have now launched a second phase of their Waiting for Wellness project (see report in the Health & Wellbeing section) to explore in more detail the experiences of young people’s mental health and accessing mental health support. They also want to hear from parents and/or carers about their experiences.

We Are With You – STAR, ASDAN Peer Mentoring & RisKit
STAR
STAR (Start Together Achieve Results) is a targeted 8-week treatment programme for young people with substance misuse issues. The programme will run in small groups of 2-6 people within school in weekly 1-hour sessions.
After an individual assessment, risk assessment and care plan, the project will cover many areas of substance misuse such as personal experiences, goal setting and the laws around drug use and possession and to help identify triggers and developing strategies for reducing and managing substance use.

ASDAN Peer Mentoring
This short course provides recognition for skills in mentoring and buddying younger people. It is open to young people of all abilities ages 13 – 18. A number of activities undertaken across five challenges leads to a ten hours certificate.

RisKit
RisKit is a multi-component risk reduction programme for young people who are vulnerable to risk taking behaviour including drug and alcohol use, early and unprotected sex and offending. The programme is aimed at 14-16 year olds, and although usually delivered in school can be used for anyone of this age group.

Lancaster City Council have recently installed a number of new recycling banks in the district where you can drop off your small pre-loved or broken electrical appliances and electronic equipment.

Our Future Coast
This project encompasses 14 sites along the North West Coast. This is a 5–6 year project ending in 2027. They are looking for people who are interested in helping to design nature-based solutions to help areas become more resilient to flooding and erosion.

Hedgerow Planting at Hare Appletree Farm
Ever wanted to get involved in a community project that will help native wildlife, improve soil quality and have a positive impact on the environment?
A local farmer is looking to re-wild large areas of land by planting native hedges and trees. This is a huge development with 40,000+ trees and hedges already planted, but with more to go he is looking to the community for assistance.

Lancashire County Council, with funding from the Department for Transport’s Active Travel Fund, aims to enhance sustainable transport, reduce traffic collisions, and create a pedestrian-friendly environment. Measures may include traffic calming, improved crossings, and enhancement of the street environment. Share your views through an online survey and attend information events on January 30th and February 23rd at Morecambe Library. Engage in the initiative to help achieve a vibrant and safer community.

The Gift of a FoodFriends membership
FoodFriends is a fundraising scheme created to support the development of regenerative local food projects and the training of new small-scale farmers. The proceeds from the scheme currently support the Plot, (a new market garden and education centre), and is used for training new entrant farmers.
The gift of a FoodFriends membership provides the recipient with the knowledge that they are supporting the future food security of the district. Every FoodFriends member is also entered into a monthly draw where they have the chance to win one of six £30 Food Vouchers to spend with a partner business.

Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Training
PAC Training and Empowerment is offering a free Youth Mental Health First Aid Course funded by Lancashire County Council. The course equips participants with the skills to recognize signs of mental ill-health and respond appropriately. Previous attendees commend the engaging activities and valuable insights gained. For those unable to commit to the two-day course, a half-day Youth Mental Health Aware course is available. Additionally, PAC offers courses on Adult Mental Health First Aid, safeTALK, and ASIST. Participants receive certification from MHFA England or Living Works. The initiative aims to increase mental health awareness and support individuals within the Lancashire area.

Large Church Hall for Event Hire
Are you looking to hold a large social event or celebrate a party or similar but short on venue ideas? The Christ Church Hall in Lancaster is currently for hire. It’s modern and spacious, with a well-equipped kitchen. The venue is fully accessible, with disabled lavatory facilities. There are also plenty of chairs and a good number of tables (large and small). A data projector and screen are available on request for your media requirements.
Bookings are welcome for social events, classes, courses, meetings, etc., either one-off or on a regular basis. The standard charge is £24 for the first hour, then £12 per hour or part-hour thereafter. Hall users are expected to set up and clear away within the times booked.

Amidst the 12 captivating installations and a mile of light interventions, you are invited to see the Morecambe prom transformed in light over the 3 exciting nights of Baylight. Be amazed as a giant sea creature’s tentacles take over the stunning Grade 2 listed Morecambe Winter Gardens. This fun installation promises to be a visual spectacle, seamlessly blending creativity and innovation to bring a touch of magic to Morecambe Seafront. To help keep this extraordinary fusion of art and architecture going in the years ahead visitors are being asked for their support through donations via the Baylight website or paying by phone on the evening.

The Woman Who Influenced Me – an online exhibition for International Women’s Day 2024 (Closing date Monday 19th February)
King Street Arts and Lancaster City Council are working together to mark International Women’s Day on Friday 8th March. The Woman Who Influenced Me will collate responses from people living in the Lancaster district about women they know who have played an important role in shaping their character and interests, being a positive influence in their life.
It only takes a few minutes to submit a response. Entries are open until Monday 19th February. (It may not be possible to include all responses.)

The Third Lancaster Rapid Play Congress is set for Sunday, February 18, 2024, offering a £1,000 prize fund (subject to entries). The event features sections like Open, Major, Intermediate, and Minor, each with specific prizes. The schedule includes 6 rounds, ECF rated, with 20 minutes per game plus 10-second increments.
The Chief Arbiter is Keith Freshwater, and Assistant Arbiter is Marcus Fung. Entry cost is £20 for platinum, gold, and silver ECF members, with an additional £9 ECF fee for bronze or non-ECF members. Break the Mould Evaluator
In 2023, the Francis Scott Trust celebrated 60 years of supporting work with young people. To mark this milestone year, they asked that a group of local young people to distribute funds on the Trust’s behalf. Young people from across the Trust’s beneficiary area of Cumbria and Lancaster District were invited to design a grants programme and distribute £60,000 throughout 2023 that would benefit other local young people via their organised groups to support activities that are important to them.
To help us document the impact of a pilot initiative, Cumbria Youth Alliance and Lancaster District CVS are seeking an experienced interviewer and evaluator to work with a small group of young people and staff from the Break the Mould project. To gather the information, CYA and LDCVS will support the professional to set up a series of informal meetings with young people and staff from the project.
