FestiVOL 2025 – Thank you!
On a grey and rainy Lancaster morning, the warmth inside King’s Community Church told a different story – one of collaboration, compassion and shared purpose. Lancaster District’s FestiVOL 2025 brought together people and organisations from across the district’s voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise (VCFSE) sector for a day dedicated to tackling health inequalities together.
This year’s theme captured what lies at the heart of our work, that in recognising that health is about far more than hospitals and prescriptions. It’s about income, housing, belonging, safety, and connection and how our sector helps shape these every day.
Guest speakers Tracy Hopkins, Chair of the Lancashire & South Cumbria VCFSE Alliance, and Michelle Collins from Lancaster University provided thought-provoking perspectives on how local action and research can combine to create fairer systems and stronger communities.
The morning’s workshops — led by The Ridge Community Centre, People First Advocacy, LDHAS, Bay Veterans and Queer by Gum — gave space for ideas, stories and new partnerships to emerge. Alongside these, creative wellbeing sessions from Wildlife Wellbeing Walks, home-baked treats from Friends of Lancaster Library, and a heartfelt performance from The Dukes’ Prime Time company brought warmth, creativity and connection to the day.
FestiVOL 2025 was more than an event; it was a reminder of what can happen when our sector comes together with openness, courage and care.To everyone who attended, contributed, or supported behind the scenes — thank you. Collectively we are building a district where everyone has the chance to live well and be well.

National Lottery Funding Secures Five-Year Boost for Lancaster’s Voluntary Sector
We’re delighted to share that we’ve secured a major five-year funding award from The National Lottery Community Fund, ensuring we can continue strengthening charities, volunteers, and community groups across the Lancaster district. This investment means we can keep building sector resilience, champion volunteering, and launch new resident-led Community Action Networks in Morecambe, while offering ongoing support with training, governance, funding advice, and collaboration. At a time when communities are under increasing pressure but full of energy and potential, this funding helps us keep local voices at the heart of change. Our Chief Officer said:
“We’re proud to be part of a movement that shows what’s possible when communities come together”.
We are deeply grateful for the ongoing support from the National Lottery Community Fund, our sector colleagues, and from everyone who uses our services and the services of our members and other local VCFSE organisations and projects.

Running Through the Bug – £700+ Raised for the Bay Foundation
This weekend our Community Health Officer Jenny took on the Lancaster Half Marathon to raise vital funds for The Bay Foundation, which supports local charities, grassroots groups and community-led projects across the district. Despite battling a heavy cold all week, Jenny was determined to get to the start line and run the full 13.1 miles, showing the same commitment and heart she brings to her work every day. Below, she shares her experience in her own words.
A few words from Jenny…
In the week before the Lancaster Half Marathon I came down with the bug everyone seems to have – nasty cough, snotty nose, the works. I’d hoped it would clear by race day but woke up still feeling rough. The only thing that got me out of bed was knowing that, thanks to friends, family and so many generous supporters, I’d already raised nearly £700 for the Bay Foundation – so the show had to go on.
The sun was out, Lancaster looked incredible in the autumn light and the atmosphere was brilliant. The route took us from Salt Ayre to Caton and back, and I even got a high five from Phil (my hubby) at mile five which gave me a much-needed boost. More cheers came at Millennium Bridge and again on the athletics track from people I knew through the Men’s Hub and Bay ICC, which kept me going for the final stretch.
One lap of the track, a “thumbs up for CVS”, and I crossed the line almost broken but very proud – even if running a half marathon while ill is definitely not medical advice I’d recommend. The bug is still hanging around, but the achievement feels worth it.
A huge thank you to every single person who sponsored me – without that support I honestly don’t think I’d have made it to the start line, never mind the finish. That’s £700 more to spend on brilliant things for people across our fantastic district.
It’s not too late to support Jenny’s fundraiser, visit her GofundMe page here.

Volunteering for Health is being delivered through a partnership between LACVS, NHS Charities Together, NHS England, and CW+, building on the recommendations of the NHS Volunteering Taskforce, with the aim of improving the volunteering experience in Northwest England.
Lancaster District CVS is supporting colleagues across Lancashire by starting to look at what is good about volunteering, what challenges there are, and how we can improve things. We also want to look at the wider reach of health volunteering and show the importance of infrastructure to make this work.
Volunteering for Health will develop a Vison for Volunteering for Lancashire from these insights. To gather data Volunteering for Health have put together a survey for residents of Lancashire to fill out, linked below. This will inform the Vision. The survey is live until the end of December 2025.
We really want Lancaster to be well represented in this survey, and this is a chance to make sure that our perspective is included in any future vision for the county. This is especially important when you consider the future changes to local authority boundaries – help us to make sure that Lancaster’s voice is heard by completing this quick, five-minute survey. Please share this if you can.

The NHS 10-year plan means more eye health services will be delivered by opticians and other community providers.
They are gathering views to understand what services you currently access via your optician and how you’d feel about accessing more services there in future. Even if you never visit your opticians, they want you to tell them why.
They’re running a survey for everyone in the UK aged over 16. Whilst they are particularly interested in the experiences of those with sight loss, you don’t have to have sight loss to take part.
The survey closes on 30th November 2025.
Need help to complete it? Call Nicola Stanley-Dickinson on 07736 462071 who will arrange a time to complete the survey with you.
