Our weekly Bulletin is full of useful information. It’s one of the ways that LDCVS  supports you to support your communities.

Before you read this week’s edition, help us to help you by anonymously answering this quick question about some of the challenges our sector faces. Everyone can answer – you don’t have to be involved in dealing with these sort of issues as part of your role.

Over the last two weeks, we asked you to look at various ways of finding funding and tell us which ones you thought presented the best opportunities for your organisation or group.

Lancashire Community Orchard Grant
Grants of up to £3,000 are available to help local organisations (including parish and town councils and schools) to deliver a community orchard project, providing a legacy to mark the King’s coronation.

Grants can be spent on orchard and nut trees (heritage varieties are preferred) and the items needed to care for them such as stakes, watering tubes and compost (but not tools, equipment or contractor costs).

Ørsted’s Community Benefit Funds
Congratulations to Lancashire Youth Challenge who were featured in the latest Ørsted Community Benefit Funds newsletter after receiving funding from the renewable energy supplier. Ørsted operate the Walney wind farm off the Cumbria coast as well as a number of others around the UK.

The Walney Extension Community Fund has awarded over £4,750,000 to 258 community projects in coastal areas of our district. To find out more about the fund and the latest deadlines, take a look at the newsletter.

The Penhale Fund Supporting Morecambe Charities
A new fund is available for charities based in Morecambe and Heysham.The Penhale Fund offers grants from £1 to £5,000 to charities, schools, and community groups in Morecambe’s LA3 and LA4 areas.

Originally established to provide sheltered housing, the Fund now focuses on community support. Applications are reviewed quarterly.

Get a share of £1m in funding  
This summer, over £1million in unrestricted funding will be donated to good causes across the UK through the easyfundraising platform. 

Through this free to use website, thousands of online retailers will donate money to your organisation when you and your volunteers, staff, trustees and supporters shop with them. Retailers who will donate include Tesco, trainline, eBay, Argos, Just Eat, Sainsbury’s, John Lewis, Asda, and 8,000 others. 

Every three months, the donations your supporters have raised through their shopping is paid to your organisation, to spend on whatever you need. No forms to fill in and no fees to pay. easyfundraising is already trusted by lots of good causes in the area. 

In May, £1.5million in unrestricted funding was donated through easyfundraising. Your organisation can be part of the next funding pay out in August by setting up your free easyfundraising page here:  

Community Radio Fund 2024-2025 Now Open
The Community Radio Fund 2024-2025 is accepting applications from eligible stations from May 21, 2024, until 5pm on June 14, 2024. The DCMS has allocated £400,000 for the financial year, with approximately half available for Round One.

The Fund supports core costs for Ofcom-licensed community radio stations. Stations broadcasting on AM, FM, or digitally via a C-DSP licence can apply. The panel will review applications in late July 2024. For more information, contact [email protected]

Society Foundation Micro-Grants Available
The Society Foundation offers micro-grants up to £2,500 to support the recently homeless, ex-offenders, and NEET young people (16-24) towards employment.

Grants can fund IT infrastructure, staff training, and external consultancy. Eligible applicants are UK charities, CIOs, SCIOs, or organisations with charitable purposes and annual turnovers under £500,000.

Applications are open from June 3 to July 8, 2024.

National Lottery Community Fund Unveils Ambitious 2024-27 Expansion
The National Lottery Community Fund has announced its largest grassroots funding expansion in 30 years, aiming to reach over 80% of UK areas under its new three-year plan. Key targets include directing over 50% of grants to the most disadvantaged communities and allocating at least 15% to environmental sustainability projects.

The plan, part of the 2024-27 Corporate Plan following the ‘It Starts with Community’ strategy, emphasises tackling inequality and supporting community-led missions.

With a renewed focus on accessibility and equity, the Fund will implement a new grant budget and allocations formula to distribute over £3 billion across the UK. This initiative celebrates the National Lottery’s 30th anniversary, with an increased focus on grassroots support and community impact.

Funding for Music Projects Supporting Dementia
Small grants of up to £2,000 are available for UK organisations using music to support people living with dementia and their carers. This funding covers costs like rehearsals, performances, and participant transport.

Eligible applicants include UK clubs, societies, charitable organisations, and statutory bodies. Priority is given to underrepresented communities.

Applications close on 17 June 2024 at 8am.

BUPA Foundation Green Community Grants 
The Bupa Foundation’s Green Community Grants, part of the #HealthyCities initiative, open for 2024 applications from June 1-30, offering up to £2,000 to schools and community groups for green space projects. In 2023, over £500,000 was invested, funding over 230 projects including outdoor classrooms and community gardens across the UK. The programme, administered by Groundwork, aims to enhance local environments and promote health.

NHS Blood and Transplant’s Community Grants Programme Opens for 2024 Applications 
The NHS Blood and Transplant’s Community Grants Programme is part of a commitment to build support for donation amongst Black, Asian, mixed heritage and minority ethnic communities.  The programme funds community and faith/beliefs organisations to drive awareness, understanding and behaviour change. Trusted local organisations can be effective at achieving these goals due to their specialist knowledge, understanding and footprint in the community.

The programme coordinators are holding a launch webinar at 5pm on Tuesday 28 May, where organisations can learn more about the programme.

The application window for funding will close at 9pm on 30 June 2024.

Synergi Focuses Small Grants Fund 2024 on Democratising Policy (England) 
Synergi is offering grants of £5,000 to build power and take collective action on mental health and racial justice within an abolitionist framework. Collectively they hope to dream, build and practice being in the world they need for the liberation from carceral structures of care.

This round of funding is open to groups led by and for those racialised as Black and as people of colour, with lived experience of mental ill-health, distress, or trauma. 

Applications must be submitted by 30 May 2024, 5pm

Funding for UK Theatres to Improve Environmental Sustainability 
The Theatres Trust, in association with Wolfson Foundation, is currently accepting applications for grants of up to £20,000 to support not-for-profit theatres in the UK who need financial support to help reduce their environmental impact. The Wolfson Foundation renewed its support for the scheme this year (2024), with a further £510,000 in total to be awarded over the next three years, thus providing further opportunities to secure funding from this highly competitive scheme. Grants can be used for capital costs of building or equipment.

The theme for applications is Improving Environmental Sustainability. Funding will be given to projects that demonstrate how a small intervention can have a big impact on reducing the theatre’s environmental impact. 

The deadline for applications is noon on 6 September 2024.

Hubbub and Starbuck’s ‘Eat it Up Fund’ Accepting UK Applications 
The Eat it Up Fund was created last year with funding provided by Starbucks (using the money coming from Starbucks 5p cup charge) in partnership with Hubbub Foundation UK, an environmental charity. Now in its second year, the grant fund is offering six grants of £60,000 each to support innovative ideas to tackle food waste in the UK. The grant must be used within a year. 

The fund will support UK registered organisations with an early-stage food waste project with potential for impact at scale.  

The funding is for initiatives that do one or more of the following:

  • Address pre-farmgate waste (the food production process, up to the point where the products have been harvested and prepared as produce for sale). 
  • Prevent food from being wasted at the manufacturing and processing stage. 
  • Minimise food waste from retailers. 
  • Find creative ways to use surplus food in communities or at home.  

The deadline for Expressions of Interest is 14 June 2024 (5pm).

Meet the funder: easyfundraising, your easy route to unrestricted funding
Does your community organisation need additional funds? Come along to find out how your organisation can receive free unrestricted funding via funding platform easyfundraising.

In this informal online session, Becky from easyfundraising will:

  • Do a live demonstration of how it works
  • Explain how to get your organisation set up
  • Give you tips on how to raise as much as possible 

There will also be Q&A session with Becky to help get a full understanding of how your organisation can benefit.

Suitable for: anyone involved in fundraising for good causes of all shapes and sizes including voluntary groups , CICs, social enterprises, churches, schools, sports clubs and charities

Crowdfund Lancashire Summer Round 2024
Crowdfund Lancashire is back, offering communities and individuals the opportunity to bring their projects to life. The Lancashire Culture and Sport Fund provides funding of up to £15,000 for community organisations, £5,000 for town and parish councils, and £1,500 for businesses and individuals. The summer round kicks off with an online launch event on June 12th at 12 pm, followed by drop-in sessions at various libraries throughout July and August. The deadline for project submissions is September 12th, 2024. Make sure to check the updated eligibility criteria for this round.

The Lancaster 1-to-1 drop in event will take place at Lancaster Library on Wednesday 17 July 2024, between 4-6.30pm.  Please email [email protected] to reserve your slot.

Hilden Charitable Trust to Accept Applications from 30 May
The Hilden Charitable Fund supports small organisations working with asylum seekers and refugees, and penal affairs, especially projects aiding women prisoners and post-release resettlement. A new programme for Malawi, Tanzania, and Uganda will be available later in 2022.

UK Programme applications will open at 10am on Thursday 30th May 2024 and close at 3pm sharp on Thursday 11th July 2024

Electricity Northwest Accepting Applications for Community Energy Projects
Electricity North West’s “Powering Our Communities” fund returns for its seventh year, offering £100,000 for early-stage community energy projects across the North West. This funding can assist with local plan development, engagement activities, overcoming barriers, feasibility studies, and business plan development.

Total Funding: £100,000
Project total: Up to £15,000
Application Deadline: Friday, July 26
Notes: Successful applicants will be notified in September

Funding to Combat Soil Degradation
Naturesave Trust is currently accepting applications fpr its Spring 2024 round. This small, registered charity is the charitable arm of Naturesave Insurance, an ethical insurance provider, and provides funding three times a year to support specific UK-based environmental, conservation and community renewable energy projects.

The theme for the current round is soil health. Grants of up to £5,000 are available for projects and initiatives working to combat the problem of soil degradation, the way land is managed and increasing soil organic matter levels in UK arable and horticultural soils in the next 20 years.

Applications are accepted from a range of UK based organisations, including charities, social enterprises, voluntary organisations, small grassroots community groups and businesses.

The application deadline for the current round is 27 June 2024 (12 noon).

Arnold Clark Community Fund Opens for 2024
Arnold Clark, the UK’s largest family-run car retailer, is offering grants to support communities across England, Scotland, and Wales. Registered charities and not-for-profit groups can apply for funding under three categories:

  • Cost of Living Support for those most affected by the cost-of-living crisis
  • Our Communities Support for local projects addressing community needs
  • Gear Up for Sport, which provides 150 sports kits each month to youth teams.

Eligible projects for Our Communities Support must fall under categories like animal welfare, arts and culture, community development, disability, education, recreation, relief support, or mental health support. Grants are up to £2,500, with applications reviewed on a rolling basis until December 2024.

Lancaster Community Fund 2024/5 – open now!
Lancaster City Council and Lancaster District CVS are inviting local charities and community groups needing help to deliver projects and activities which will benefit local people to apply for funding from the Lancaster Community Fund.

Organisations can apply for grants of up to £1,000 and applications from new start up groups and small grassroots groups are particularly welcomed. The grant pot is made up of several charity funds donated to Lancaster City Council to support those living in disadvantaged areas of the community.

The fund has three main priorities:

  • Projects that increase community involvement, build community wealth and resilience.
  • Projects that contribute towards carbon reduction and a more sustainable district.
  • Projects that contribute to individual and community wellbeing

The opening and closing dates for the 2024/5 rounds are:

  • Round one opens 9 May 2024 and closes 7 June 2024
  • Round two opens 3 October 2024 and closes 1 November 2024
  • Round three opens 30 January 2025 and closes 28 February 2025

The Henry Moore Foundation Sculpture Grants
The Henry Moore Grants support sculpture projects across historical, modern, and contemporary categories. Funding is available for new projects, acquisitions, research, and travel grants for individuals and organisations involved in sculpture.  Grants range up to £20,000 for organisations and up to £2,500 for individuals.

Applications are accepted four times a year, and the upcoming deadline is 1 June, 11pm.

Funding to Support Contemporary Music Projects
The Hinrichsen Foundation is offering grants to charities and other organisations across the UK to support the performance of contemporary music, which may include the commissioning of new work, non-commercial recording, or publication.

There are two levels of funding available:

  • One-off small grants typically between £500 and £2,500 (for new applicants and former beneficiaries).
  • Larger projects or concert series generally £2,000 and over.

The Trustees will occasionally provide funds for research projects that are not being conducted under the remit of an academic institution. Multi-year partnerships may also be considered.

There are typically three application deadlines per year.

Jerwood Foundation Accepting Applications for Summer 2024 Funding Round
Jerwood Foundation’s Summer funding round is now open with decisions to be announced in July 2024. They support arts organisations with projects aiming to make art accessible for the public. Grants range up to £20,000 and are awarded to projects starting between 3 to 12 months from the funding round closing date. The focus is on promoting arts for public benefit, and they do not fund individuals, educational courses, or core organisational costs.

Eric Wright Charitable Trust 2024
Once again, Lancaster District CVS is working with the Eric Wright Charitable Trust to distribute grants of up to £500 to community organisations with an annual income below £50,000. Projects simply need to show how they can make a positive difference to the lives and wellbeing of people of any age.

Unlike previous years, there are no fixed application deadlines. Apply for funding at any time up until midnight on 31 July, and we’ll let you know the result by the middle of the following month. For example, all organisations who submit an application before midnight on 31 January will find out whether or not they have a grant in the middle of February, February applicants will find out in March, and so on until the fund is entirely allocated.

Lets BeFriends AGM
Let’s BeFriends would like to invite all to the their Annual General Meeting (A.G.M) on Wednesday 5th June 2-3pm in Cornerstone Room 1. This will be an opportunity to hear the Annual Report and the Treasurers Report delivered which will give an overview of the work and growth of Let’s BeFriends over the last 12 months. BanktheFood App with Morecambe Bay Foodbank
Morecambe Bay Food Bank are asking those in the community to consider downloading the app  “Bank The Food” which will keep you up to date about all items they are short of. The app can be used on your mobile device whilst you are out shopping in your local supermarkets.

BanktheFood is free, easy to download and use and aims to support food banks by ensuring they receive the items they need most. The app alerts users when they’re at a supermarket, reminding them of their local food bank’s requirements. BanktheFood is striving to enlist all food banks nationwide to enhance their efficiency and effectiveness.

Request for Grand Opening of Accessible Nature Trail 
The team at Claver Hill are in the process of organising a grand opening of their accessible nature trail, with a likelihood of it being held in the first half of July.  The organisers hope to confirm the date once they have ideas of which activities can be arranged.  This is where your help is needed! 

The event organisers want to welcome all people to visit the new accessible nature trail.  You may be partially sighted, have mobility issues, require the use of a push chair, or just want to join in the celebration.  There will be refreshments and activities for all ages. 

Do you know of anyone who would be willing to host a session on using nature’s items for percussion music, lead an art session using natural materials or lead a well-being walk or forage walk?

How to Support Disabled Employees in the Workplace  
There are 16 million disabled people in the UK – that’s one in four people. Disabled people are twice as likely to be unemployed as non-disabled people. This is partly due to a lack of support for disabled employees at work.

Sally Hooper, an expert in disability inclusion at Scope, has written an article for CharityJob about what you should do to support disabled employees at your organisation.

Unlocking Finance for Community Business 
Power to Change’s latest report, “Financing the Future Economy,” explores how to unlock affordable, flexible, and accessible finance for community businesses.

The report emphasises the importance of diverse funding sources while highlighting the challenges faced by community businesses in accessing finance, and offers recommendations for funders, social investors, and government to support the growth and sustainability of community businesses. Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) are in place to protect individuals from unsolicited marketing communications. Breaches of these regulations can have serious consequences for charities, including fines and damage to their reputation.

King Street Arts (Lancaster) CIC Crowdfund Project Update
King Street Arts is crowdfunding to offer free acrylic painting workshops for people with little or no art experience. The project aims to provide 8 sessions for 2 groups of 8 participants, encouraging creative expression and promoting the benefits of play. The project will culminate in a public exhibition of participants’ work. They aim to raise £8,451, with £5,292 pledged so far.

Roy and Kath at King Street Arts have provided an update on how things are going:

“We are extremely moved by the generosity and support we have received to date for this campaign to provide free opportunities for people to explore ART; and in particular the health and wellbeing benefits learning to be creative can bring into our daily lives.

We strongly believe that being able to access creative experiences can significantly contribute to improving wellbeing and self-fulfilment. Feedback and discussions with workshop participants over the years have reinforced our belief that engagement with creativity in all its forms has the potential to have a positive and life affirming impact on anyone’s life.

In our gallery at 5a King Street we have over the past 6 years regularly offered creative workshops to the public. These are offered for a fee to reflect the costs of providing a space to deliver the workshop, the materials needed, and the cost of paying the artist to prepare and deliver the sessions. For most of these workshops we (the directors) provide free support in the form of marketing and administration.

Every contribution we receive will help us to get to our goal, if you have already contributed or not in a position to please share to anyone you feel would be interested in supporting the work we do.”

Rookhow Availability
A late cancellation has opened up an opportunity for a Summer weekend at the Rookhow Retreat. The newly renovated and energy efficient Bunkbarn has underfloor heating powered by an air source heat pump, with new toilets and showers and kitchen. The site includes 12 acres of woodland with use of the Quaker Meeting House for extra group space and the yurt for a nature-filled stay in the middle of the woods.

The Dukes & Lancaster University – Dementia Research
The Dukes are working in partnership with a research team from Lancaster University, and are looking for people to take part in a short-term pilot project. The research title is ‘Cinema, Memory Work and Well-being in Older People’. 

If you are 65+ or are living with dementia, they would like to invite you to come and watch a free screening of The Graduate at the Dukes on 20th May, and also consider applying to take part in some research tasks prior to and following the film screening.

Bay Health Festival Support Request 
Bay Health Festivals are looking for support from the community to help fund their future events. From individual donations to corporate sponsorship, all contributions to their population health mission are gratefully received.

Community Shares Impact Report
Co-operatives UK has published the first ever Community Shares Impact Report of its community shares work. A retrospective of 2023, the report captures some of the numbers and stories from the Community Shares Unit’s activities.

The report reflects on the achievements of the Community Shares Unit, highlighting its role in supporting community investment. Co-operatives UK, along with partners Locality and Plunkett Foundation, oversees the initiative, promoting best practices, funding community share offers, and training practitioners.

In 2023, the Booster Fund, with support from Access the Foundation for Social Investment, aided numerous communities in raising investment for various projects. Key stats include support for 80 communities, 33 share offers meeting the Standard Mark, and a total of £5.24m sought through the Booster Fund.

New mental health support group, Community Mind CIC, is looking fo some volunteers to help with the following:

Morecambe Maritime Festival 2024

Morecambe is a town rich in history and culture connected with the sea and the Morecambe Maritime Festival aims to bring those things to local people and visitors later this year – from acts performing traditional and “modern” songs or shanties, which were used to coordinate the physical labour of hauling ropes etc on sailing ships, to local  heritage, cultural, wildlife and environmental community groups running activities. It promises to be entertaining and fascinating in equal measure, but the team behind it need urgent help if it’s going to go ahead as planned.

Volunteers are needed to act as treasurer, secretary, and social media coordinator for the festival. You can see all three roles on our website.

You don’t need to know anything about Morecambe’s maritime past, or even maritime topics in general, to help with these roles, although obviously an interest in the subject would be an advantage. Volunteer at the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution’s Lancashire Events
The RABI is a leading charity supporting farming communities. They are looking for volunteers at their events including:

  • Great Eccleston Show on 13/14 July
  • Royal Lancashire Show on 19/20/21 July
  • Garstang Show on 3 July

Helping out at these events is great for anyone who likes the fresh air, enjoys meeting people, and has a keen interest in farming.

Volunteer Roles with Guide Dogs
Guide Dogs is seeking a Fundraiser to join their local team, assisting with event stalls, collection boxes, and donation counting to raise money for Guide Dogs. Ideal candidates enjoy interacting with others and have good communication skills. Volunteers will gain experience in event organisation and support people with sight loss.

This role includes one hour of training and offers support from a dedicated volunteer manager. Expenses related to volunteering are covered.

Fundraising Group Coordinator
This role will organise local fundraising activities such as collections, social events, and Tea Parties. This role involves coordinating with volunteers, building relationships with local organisations, and ensuring compliance with fundraising policies. Volunteers should be enthusiastic, good communicators, and passionate about event planning.

The role typically requires 5-6 hours per week and a commitment of at least 12 months. Training and support are provided, and expenses are reimbursed.

Puppy Raiser
By raising puppies, volunteers will provide them with essential training for their future roles as guide dogs. Volunteers will care for the puppy in their home for 12-16 months, following the PREP programme and providing necessary socialisation, exercise, and training. Ideally, volunteers should have time to invest, be physically able to handle large breed dogs, and have access to a car and a secure area for the puppy.

Training and support are provided, with 13 hours of initial training. Expenses are reimbursed.

Volunteer Recruitment Event – Friday 7 June 2024
Book your place now at our volunteer recruitment event on Friday 7 June, 12 noon til 2.30pm, at St Nicholas’ Arcade in Lancaster. Space is limited and booking is required.

We will be setting up some tables in the arcade and if you are an organisation in need of new volunteers you will have the opportunity to bring your banners and promotional materials and talk directly to people interested in volunteering. Lune Valley Bee Keepers are seeking a volunteer to manage their Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp social media platforms. As the new beekeeping season is in full swing, the majority of their social media activity takes place between March and October.

Trans and Gender Diverse Health Needs Assessment  
Local stakeholders who provide services to the TGD population are being encouraged to take part in a remote interview which will investigate the particular health needs and challenges experienced by TGD individuals across Lancashire.   

This will cover aspects such as physical and mental health and well-being. For example, rates of smoking, drinking and physical activity. Topics also covered will include housing, employment and education along with healthcare services and barriers to accessing these.   

Interviews will be expected to last about half an hour, will be semi-structured and both audio and visually recorded.

Stay Connected with Your Integrated Care Community (ICC) 
Integrated Care Communities (ICCs) are integrated teams of health and care workers, third sector organisations, statutory organisations and wider community assets. We work together with the aim to improve physical & mental health outcomes, promote wellbeing and reduce health inequalities. 

In the Lancaster District we have 3 ICCs, Lancaster, Bay and Carnforth. Each hosts a monthly online networking meeting which is a great opportunity to meet new partners, find out what is happening locally and share updates of your own.  Each ICC also has a Facebook page and a monthly newsletter that goes out far and wide.

Waiting for Wellness Phase Two Report

Spring has sprung, encouraging outdoor activities, but it’s important to be aware of health risks. Lancashire’s Health Protection Team advises on tick-borne Lyme disease, Giant Hogweed burns, and Weil’s disease from contaminated water. Mental Health Awareness Week 
Mental Health Awareness Week runs from the 13th to the 19th of May 2024. The theme this year is “Movement: Moving more for mental health.”

Moving more can increase your energy, reduce stress and anxiety and boost your self-esteem. This is just one of the fascinating facts you will learn if you take this PAC certified Mental Health First Aid Course. The course takes place live and online. If you live, work, study or volunteer within the Lancashire County Council border then the places are free!  

The course will cover youth and adult mental health, suicide alertness and suicide intervention skills training. There are just a couple of places left on the first course in June and the course is also taking place in July with places already filling up.

Loneliness Awareness Week is coming up from 10 – 16 June, and DCMS welcomes you to get involved by sharing the Department’s loneliness campaign across your channels.

Loneliness Awareness Week is an annual campaign organised by Marmalade Trust to raise awareness of loneliness. This year’s theme, ‘Random Acts of Connection’, encourages everyday moments of connection to help us feel happier and increase a sense of belonging. Research shows that feelings of loneliness are most prevalent among young people.

The DCMS Better Health – Every Mind Matters loneliness campaign aims to normalise loneliness so that 16 – 24 year olds know that it is OK to feel lonely sometimes, and feel able to speak to someone if they do feel lonely, building a national conversation.

Volunteering opportunities for young people under 18
A number of organisations have indicated that they will consider offering volunteering opportunities to people under 18. You can contact CVS or the organisation directly for more information.

Police Cadet recruitment opened in April, ages 13 to 17.

Marsh Community Centre has a food club that they need volunteers for, Thursdays 10am til 1pm.

The Centre@Halton can possibly offer a couple of hours on either a Saturday or Sunday in the Coffee Shop (open 10am to 5pm) helping to take orders, prepare drinks and snacks.

The Salvation Army charity shop in Carnforth offers volunteering roles to 14 and 15 year olds specifically to support DofE completion, offering different hours on Saturdays and Sundays depending on whether it’s bronze or silver.

The Global Village Cafe have said that they’re open to under 18s taking part, but there is no regular schedule/opportunity. Keep an eye on their website – and contacting around the times when events are coming up.

St Johns Hospice take volunteers for their shops from age 14 upwards.

Ryelands Junior Park Run have said that they can offer various roles for people under 18 to help towards the DofE award.

West Lancashire Scouts (they cover the whole of this side of Lancashire) have roles for younger people as part of their young leaders work.

The YMCA charity shop in Lancaster is happy to take a 15 year old volunteer, however some paperwork will need to be completed by parent/guardian beforehand though. The role is not customer-facing and is mainly sorting/tagging stock (mostly clothing) and tidying the shop.

Claver Hill is a food growing project in Lancaster and they will take people under 18 but only if they are accompanied by an adult.

The NHS has a work placement scheme. It is for people aged 16 and above only and people can check out the ‘placements’ section here. Their next recruitment window has just opened in May.

Blue Influencers Scheme
Developed by UK-wide educational charity The Ernest Cook Trust, the Blue Influencers Scheme is a three-year initiative that focuses on reconnecting young people aged 10-14 to their blue spaces.

It will support young people from underserved communities and those living in deprived coastal, estuary and riverside locations, by empowering them to act on environmental issues.

There are now Blue Mentors in post at Global Link and Morecambe Bay Partnership who are seeking to work with groups of young people (target age 10-14 years-olds) on environmental social action projects.

Composting food waste from SMEs in North Lancashire
New research into the feasibility of collecting and composting inedible food waste from small and medium enterprises in the Lancaster district has just been published.

Join this session to hear more about the research findings, including four potential models for diverting food waste from SMEs in the district into compost. We’ll then take a deep dive into the recommended models to explore ways to make them a reality.

Whether you are a business owner, council member, researcher, keen composter or otherwise interested, this session will be a great opportunity to understand the research findings and recommended models, to network with others who are interested in making better use of business food waste and to explore tackling the issue as a way to take effective climate action locally.

The Plot is seeking 20 more people to join its crop-share scheme this growing season. Not only will you get fresh and 100% locally grown organic veg each week delivered to a nearby community collection point or your doorstep from June to November; but your money goes towards supporting this local market garden that hosts a farmstart training programme, and in so doing is actively working to build a ring of agro ecological growers around the city.

The crop share model builds a direct relationship between grower and buyer/ eater and shares the risk of the season with the grower.

Wildlife Wellbeing Walks & Marsh Community Centre
The Pots of Possibility grant programme has funded a collaboration between Wildlife Wellbeing Walks and Marsh Community Centre, which aims to bring people together with themes around connection, food, environment and sustainability.

As well as sessions for the centre’s regular youth groups, Gardening Club, and Coffee & Cake club, a series of events will take place one Saturday a month:

  • Bug Hunt & Nature Collaging – 22 June 1.30pm – 3pm, 50p per child
  • Cooking for All: Sharing Lunch – 27 July, 1pm – 3pm, £1 per person
  • Harvest-time Family Day – 28 September, 1pm – 3pm, 50p per person

Launch Event: Lancaster District Allotment Review 
Join LESS for a seasonal community meal and hear about the Lancaster District Allotment Review findings and recommendations for Lancaster City Council, allotment sites, and others. This 8-month project examined the current state of allotments in the Lancaster District, including their size, facilities, management, contribution to biodiversity and other areas of support needs. 

Information was gathered through visits to 21 allotment sites, an online survey with nearly 250 responses, interviews, community conversations, and reviewing relevant reports and research. A summary of the report will be presented, followed by a Q&A session. 

The meal will be provided by the Closing Loops community chef network.

Open Space Assessment in the District Consultation 
Do you live in the Lancaster District and visit our open spaces? 

Lancaster City Council officers in Planning Policy and Public Realm are working together with consultants Ethos Environmental Planning to produce a new Open Space Assessment for the District.

This will be used as a key piece of evidence to help inform the preparation of the Local Plan review, by identifying and assessing open spaces to better understand the needs of the District and where there might be deficiencies in provision, which in turn will be used to establish a set of standards that can be used to calculate developer contributions towards the enhancement of existing open spaces. 

The planning team are keen to understand more about how residents use and value local public open spaces and recreation facilities; and what might improve their attractiveness to local people. This will provide invaluable information to assess if there are any gaps in provision and to ensure that existing facilities and open spaces are managed effectively to meet the needs of the local people.   

It would be much appreciated if you would be able to take 5-10 minutes to complete an online survey which can be found on their consultation hub. 

There is also the opportunity to add any site specific comments you may like to make on an interactive map. 

The Sew and Sow Boxes Project Needs You!
Food Futures, the Sewing Cafe and Lancaster Seed Library are part of a great joint project, inspired by free book libraries where members of the public can share their resources or pick up some for repairing, making or growing. The boxes are filled with haberdashery items and packets of spare seeds.

More people are being encouraged to get involved to take joint responsibility of a box. This would involve checking the box’s condition, keeping it free of insects, topping it up with supplies and keeping it protected from the weather, with help if required!

The Food Champions Celebration
The Food Champions network is hosting a midsummer celebration where people can come together, share a meal and celebrate the wonderful projects and food citizens across North Lancashire.  There will be a guided tour of the site at Claver Hill, an open fire cooking demonstration, a composting/food waste demonstration and the day will finish with music and songs around the bonfire!

They can come to you – your school, community group, food club etc. to use for free for a fun day of fruit processing. FREE two-day Mental Health First Aid Training
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an internationally recognised two-day training course which teaches people how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and provide help on a first aid basis. MHFA England training will teach you the best way to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis.

The course normally costs up to £300, but in this case is fully funded by Lancashire County Council Public Health and is free. However, delegates must pay a £50 deposit (plus £2.65 covering ticketing and payment fees charged by our suppliers) at the time of booking. Your £50 deposit will be repaid on completion of both full days.

Supporting and engaging with people in recovery
Join us online on Tuesday 25th June for a 30 minute briefing session about the particular needs and experiences of someone in recovery. How can you better support service users who are in or have gone through recovery from drug/alcohol addiction? How can you better support and engage volunteers from the recovery community?

We will be joined by Ged Pickersgill from The Well Communities who will talk about his own lived experience and give his professional perspective. You will also have an opportunity to ask questions.

Everyone is different and sometimes we need to rethink our approaches, whether in service delivery or other engagements, depending on who we’re supporting. Even when we think we’re being inclusive, we might be inadvertently not treating someone in the most effective way to help them, simply because we don’t know about or understand the things that we could do differently that would make a difference to that individual in the best way possible.

Social Investment – an Alternative Source of Funds
Social investment is an increasingly popular form of funding which can help a charity or social enterprise to increase its social impact.

As a charity or social enterprise, you can use repayable finance to help you increase your impact on society, for example by growing your business, providing working capital for contract delivery, or buying assets.

The session will explore how social investment can help with organisations diversifying income sources, rather than relying on grants, as the grant climate becomes more and more competitive.

It will explore social investment, demystifying some myths, as well as helping organisations decide whether social investment is the right fit for them.

Risk Management and Insurance in the Third Sector
This free session will look at the risks that community groups and charities face.

By the end of the session you will understand:

  • how to assess risk
  • who should assess risk
  • the role of insurance

We will discuss risk matters of concern to the groups present, raise subjects that you might not have thought about, and answer common questions that arise. We encourage participants to provide subjects, questions and scenarios before the session to be specifically answered on the day to make it as relevant for local groups as possible.

Tim Larden of Ladbrook Insurance will run the session. Tim has over 20 years experience in the insurance sector and has worked specifically with charities for over 12 years. Beacon Lighting Event for 80th D-Day Anniversary
A beacon lighting event will take place in Morecambe to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Come along and join Morecambe Town Council outside Morecambe Town Hall at 9pm on June 6 for a special beacon lighting ceremony commemorating the anniversary.

Attendees can witness the lighting of a specially-designed beacon and enjoy nostalgic war-time songs performed by Morecambe-based singer Leigh Rhianon Coggins.

Phil McGrath, formerly of The Cornerstone Lancaster, now working with Citizens Advice North Lancs as Macmillan advisor, Beyond Radio presenter (and all round amazing human) recently bravely shared that he is fighting cancer for the third time and is taking on 60 different challenges before his 60th birthday to fulfil his bucket list and raise money for charity. Phil has launched his ’60 Before 60 Challenge’ aiming to do all the things he’s always wanted to, but never got round to before. Phil has challenged us to nominate him a challenge to add to his list.

Think CO! Carbon Monoxide Risk Awareness Workshop
An online workshop called “Think CO” educates frontline workers and volunteers on carbon monoxide (CO) risks in vulnerable people’s homes. It covers CO sources, signs, prevention, and implications for both workers and clients. The workshop, hosted by Gas Safe Charity, is conducted on Zoom and lasts for about an hour.
