Eden Project Update – Thank You!
A huge thank you to everyone who attended our Eden Project Morecambe update event recently at the The Rainbow Centre in Morecambe!
Hosted by Lancaster District CVS, this gathering provided a unique opportunity for our sector to hear directly from Si Bellamy, Chief Transformation Officer, and Tracy Robbins, UK Delivery Manager for Eden Project Communities.
Si and Tracy offered valuable insights into the Eden Project Morecambe’s green-lit plans and shared their vision for a project that deeply involves and benefits our communities. The engaging Q&A session was particularly inspiring, with so many ideas, concerns, and ambitions shared by local organisations. It was truly energising to witness the depth of community interest and commitment.
We appreciate everyone’s input, questions, and enthusiasm—and look forward to continuing these conversations and partnerships with the Eden team and Lancaster City Council in the near future!

Make it Big with Pathway Fund
Make It Big with Pathway Fund will provide eight selected charities and social enterprises with £25,000 in grant funding, along with tailored support and capacity-building resources. Their goal is to help your organisation strengthen its financial resilience and operational capacity, paving the way for future social investment.

Branching Out Fund – Upcoming Deadline
The Tree Council’s Branching Out Fund is now open for applications, offering grants from £250 to £2,500 to community groups, schools, small charities, and Tree Warden Networks for tree, hedgerow, and orchard planting projects. Applications are due by midnight on 1 December 2024, with all planting completed and claims submitted by 16 March 2025. Grants are reimbursed after planting upon submission of evidence.

Cash4Clubs Extends Application Deadline to 12 December 2024
The Cash4Clubs grant program, funded by Flutter UK & Ireland, has extended its application deadline to 12 December 2024. This opportunity offers unrestricted grants of £2,000 to not-for-profit groups, charities, and sports clubs across the UK and Ireland. The program prioritizes projects using sports to address social issues, boost physical and mental well-being, and increase participation among underrepresented groups, such as women, LGBTQ+ communities, and those from diverse or lower socio-economic backgrounds. Applications must demonstrate a broader community impact, and funds must be utilised within six months.

NLCF Seeks Development Partners for New Community Power Fund
The National Lottery Community Fund (NLCF) has announced its plan to distribute £3 billion by 2030 to support communities in England. Expressions of interest are open for three new programs: the Community Power Fund, You Decide Funding, and Grant Holder Support, aimed at increasing community voice and resilience. Grants range from £50,000 to £200,000, with additional funding for onward granting to communities. This initiative prioritises organisations tackling poverty, disadvantage, and discrimination.
Expressions of interest for all three programmes will open on 8 January 2025.

Power To Change
Do you have an exciting vision for your high street or town center you’re trying to make a reality?
Power to Change is collaborating with a small number of community businesses to test and learn how community-led high street regeneration projects can be a model for communities everywhere.
They want to learn with and from you about how community-led high street regeneration works in practice. What are your ambitions for your community and your local high street? What challenges are you facing in making your vision a reality? Why do you think your community-led approach will create sustainable local regeneration?

Community Radio Fund
Ofcom invites applications for the second round of the Community Radio Fund 2024-25, with £411,759 available. Grants ranging from £4,320 to £33,854 will support core costs like management, fundraising, and community outreach for Ofcom-licensed stations.

Paul Hamlyn Foundation’s Arts Fund
The Paul Hamlyn Foundation is offering grants between £90,000 to £300,000 over three years for not-for-profit cultural organisations using art to drive social change. Funding supports core costs, focusing on capacity building, social justice, and equity in the arts. Eligible organisations must have a turnover of at least £60,000.

Young Gamechangers Fund
The Co-op Foundation, in partnership with Co-op and the #iwill Fund, offers grants of up to £20,000 for youth-led groups driving social change in their communities. The Young Gamechangers Fund supports projects in activism, campaigning, and community cohesion. Eligible groups must have 75% youth leadership (ages 10-25) and an annual income under £100,000. Priority given to youth with lived experiences like barriers to education or rural isolation.
Applications involve a two-stage process, with the eligibility checker deadline on 4 December 2024.

Defibrillator Funding for Community Spaces
The Department of Health and Social Care is offering match-funded grants for defibrillators in public spaces across England through a £1 million Community AED Fund. Eligible organisations must provide match funding (around £750) and install the defibrillator in an accessible, 24/7 public location within 4 weeks. Applications are on a first-come, first-served basis, with about 400 units remaining.
The scheme is expected to close by mid-December 2024 but may end sooner if funds are allocated quickly.

Funding for Civil Society Organisations to Give Evidence to CESCR
Grants of up to £7,500 are being offered to civil society organisations in Britain to support their participation in a critical UN review process. These grants will enable organisations to provide in-person evidence to the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, scheduled to take place in Geneva in February 2025. The funding will help groups represent marginalised communities and share insights on rights issues in Britain, such as employment, education, health, and social services.
The funding is provided by the UK’s Equality and Human Rights Commission, which will accept applications until 11pm on the 1st December 2024.

WCIT Charity IT4Good
The WCIT Charity is inviting educational and not-for-profit organisations across the UK to apply for its IT4Good Grants Programme. If you’re working on innovative IT projects—like new apps, AI solutions, training programs, or accessibility tools—this could be a great funding opportunity. Grants of up to £15,000 are available, especially for projects that promote education, digital inclusion, or IT for good causes. They’re looking for projects that can be scaled up and have long-term impact. And if WCIT is a major or sole funder of your IT component, you’re more likely to be successful.

BGF Foundation Partnership Grants
The BGF Foundation is offering £100,000 grants (over two years) plus pro bono support to 4-5 UK charities working with disadvantaged young people aged 7-30 in areas like education, employment, and mental health. Eligible charities must have 3+ years of operation, an income between £1-3 million, and demonstrate recent growth.
Apply by submitting an Expression of Interest by 29 November 2024 at 5 PM.

Get Fishing Fund
The Get Fishing Fund has reopened for 2025 applications. The fund aims to support organisations in delivering angling activities that attract and retain new participants in the sport. This funding is available to angling clubs, fisheries, charities, schools, and local authorities in England looking to increase engagement in angling. Projects must be conducted at freshwater fisheries where a fishing licence is required. Building on its success since 2020, the Environment Agency and Angling Trust have announced an additional £150,000 investment for 2025, with grants of up to £2,500 available per project.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling weekly basis. The final deadline for applications is Friday, 6 December 2024.

Weston Charity Awards
The Garfield Weston Foundation, in partnership with Pilotlight, is offering the Weston Charity Awards to registered charities in Wales, the North, and Midlands of England. These awards are aimed at charities working in youth, welfare, environment, and community sectors. Each of the 22 award finalists will receive over £22,000 worth of support, including a fully funded year of strategic guidance from Pilotlight and an unrestricted cash grant of £6,500. Additional benefits include access to a network of local charities, travel expenses, and peer-to-peer learning sessions. Eligible charities must have an annual income of under £5 million, at least two years of service delivery, and a paid full-time leader.
The application deadline is 8 January 2025.

Allen Lane Foundation Updates Criteria
A new funding stream is available for UK charities supporting marginalised and discriminated groups. The Foundation is prioritising work with specific groups, including female asylum seekers, female offenders, isolated older adults (70+), survivors of violence or abuse, Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities, and individuals with moderate to severe mental health issues. There is also a focus on vulnerable young people aged 12-21, particularly those excluded from education or leaving care. Grants range from £5,000 to £15,000, with the possibility of funding over two or three years.
Applications are reviewed three times a year, with the next deadline for the February 2025 meeting set for early December 2024.

Rosa’s Voices from the Frontline Fund
Rosa’s Voices from the Frontline Fund is returning for its seventh year, offering grants of up to £10,000 for women’s and girls’ organisations engaged in campaigning and advocacy work. The fund supports UK-based not-for-profits that are women-led and focused on creating change for women and girls.

100x Impact Accelerator
100x Impact Accelerator, based at LSE, is inviting applications from social ventures with scalable solutions addressing global challenges in areas like climate, health, and education. Selected ventures will receive £150,000 in funding, 12 weeks of programming, and access to a network of experts and funders. Applications are open until 6 January 2025, with early submission encouraged.

Hinrichsen Foundation
The Hinrichsen Foundation have opened their application window for their third funding round, offering grants to individuals, community groups, and charities for UK-based contemporary classical music projects, including commissions, recordings, performances, and festivals. Grants range from £500 to multi-year partnerships, with priority given to projects where funding will significantly impact project viability.
Applications are due by 5 PM on December 12, 2024, for activities starting from February 2025 onwards.

Let Teachers SHINE Annual Competition
Got a bright idea to boost student success? Applications for Let Teachers SHINE 2024 are now open, offering grants of up to £25,000 for innovative educational projects! This annual competition, run by the SHINE charity, has funded over £4 million in creative teaching ideas, from maths apps and revision podcasts to literacy projects powered by music. If you’re a teacher in England with a vision to help students in the North from disadvantaged backgrounds, now’s your chance!

Foyle Foundation Small Grants Scheme
The Foyle Foundation’s Small Grants Scheme is currently open for applications to support projects or activities that can be completed by the end of 2025. Open to charities, the scheme operates on a rolling basis, though competition is high due to a large volume of applications. Interested applicants should ensure they have trustee and management permission to apply.
Applications are being accepted until 31 January 2025.

Ulverscroft Foundation for Visually Impaired People
The Ulverscroft Foundation offers grants between £100 and £500,000 to organisations supporting visually impaired individuals in the UK and abroad. Funding can support eye clinics, schools, libraries, and community groups, with a focus on projects that provide lasting benefits, such as equipment or time-limited staffing.
Applications are accepted quarterly, with the next deadline on December 15, 2024.

Core Funding to Support Young People, Disadvantaged Families, Prisoners
The Woodward Charitable Trust is offering core funding grants up to £3,000 for UK charities with an annual turnover under £200,000, supporting initiatives that benefit young people (up to 25 years), disadvantaged families, and prisoners or ex-offenders. The funds can be used for core costs, including salaries, rent, and utilities, focusing on small-scale, local projects.
Applications open on November 4 and close on December 13, 2024. Charities may apply annually up to three times within five years.

Theatres Trust’s Small Grants for Capital Improvements
The Theatres Trust is offering small grants of up to £5,000 to UK charities and not-for-profit theatres for essential capital improvements. Eligible projects include repairs, installations, and equipment upgrades that boost resilience, sustainability, accessibility, or audience diversity. Applicants must manage theatres with at least a five-year lease and host at least 30 performances annually.

School-Based Nursery Capital Grants
Thousands of families are one step closer to accessible, affordable and high-quality early years provision in their local area, as the first stage of the government’s plan to deliver 3,000 school-based nurseries begins on 17 October. Primary schools can now apply for up to £150,000 of £15 million capital funding, with the first stage of the plan set to support up to 300 new or expanded nurseries across England.

Cultural Bridge Fund
The Cultural Bridge programme is now accepting applications for 2025-2026, supporting UK and German arts and cultural organisations in developing partnerships focused on social arts practice. The programme builds on collaboration, skill-sharing, and idea exchange to address community issues in both countries.
The deadline for applications is Tuesday, 26th November 2024. Ensure eligibility by reviewing the full guidance before applying.

Comic Relief Community Fund for England
The Comic Relief Community Fund for England are offering grants of up to £10,000 to community-led organisations addressing key social issues through lived experiences. Funding focuses on four themes: Children Survive and Thrive, Fighting for Gender Justice, A Safe Place to Be, and Mental Health Matters. Eligible applicants include constituted voluntary groups, charities, social enterprises, and CICs that have been operational for at least two years.
The deadline is 29th November 2024, though the fund may close earlier if enough applications are received. Apply via the Groundwork website.

Improve Communication Skills Among Disadvantaged Adults
UK-registered charities can now apply for grants of up to £5,000 to support projects aimed at improving communication skills for disadvantaged adults and helping NEET individuals into employment.
Eligible charities must have been registered for at least three years, with an annual turnover between £25,000 and £500,000. Projects should enable beneficiaries to achieve at least one accredited vocational qualification and focus on groups facing significant barriers to employment, such as women, refugees, and people with disabilities. Priority will be given to match-funded or self-sustaining initiatives. Grants cannot cover capital costs, and there is a two-stage application process.
The deadline for stage one applications is 6 January 2025 for consideration in March 2025.

Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund
Wave 3 of the Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund is now open for applications, offering funding to local authorities and social housing landlords to improve the energy efficiency of social homes in England. The fund aims to upgrade homes below EPC band C, reducing carbon emissions, tackling fuel poverty, and supporting green jobs. Social housing providers, including small landlords, are encouraged to apply, with flexible options for those managing fewer than 100 homes.
Applications are due by midday on 25th November 2024.

Eric Wright Charitable Trust
Lancaster District CVS is working with the Eric Wright Charitable Trust to distribute grants of up to £500 to community organisations with an annual income below £50,000. Projects simply need to show how they can make a positive difference to the lives and wellbeing of people of any age.
Unlike previous years, there are no fixed application deadlines. Apply for funding at any time, and we’ll let you know the result by the middle of the following month. For example, all organisations who submit an application before midnight on 31 January will find out whether or not they have a grant in the middle of February, February applicants will find out in March, and so on until the fund is entirely allocated.

£100 Million Dormant Assets Funding for Youth Services
The Culture Secretary has announced £100 million from dormant assets funding to support youth services from 2024 to 2028, as part of a £350 million initiative. This investment will fund facilities, opportunities, and a new National Youth Strategy, co-produced with young people to shape better local and national support. Highlights include £26 million for youth club renovations via the Better Youth Spaces programme. Also, the National Citizen Service (NCS) will wind down by March 2025, with the government focusing on a refreshed approach to youth engagement and opportunities.

Energy Matters: Stay Warm and Well
Citizens Advice North Lancashire, in partnership with Green Rose, offers free energy advice to Lancaster and Morecambe residents. Services include help with understanding bills, communicating with energy suppliers, managing energy debts, and applying for retrofit grants. Support extends to practical energy efficiency tips, installing energy-saving devices, and income maximization. Home visits are available for vulnerable clients. Eggcup Crowdfunder
Eggcup, a much-loved and vital food project in Lancaster is currently facing severe financial challenges and uncertainty around the future of its warehouse and food hub. Without significant funding by Christmas, Eggcup may be forced to close by the end of the year.
To help prevent this, Eggcup has launched a crowdfunder and is seeking community support. Please consider sharing the campaign within your networks and on social media using the link Go Fund Me page.

Lancaster City Council Council Housing Allocations Policy Review
The Council Housing service are required to provide a policy on how they allocate residential accommodation from public stock and from Private Registered Providers of Social Housing, who they work in partnership with.
Consultation on the policy has begun, with stage one gathering feedback on proposed amendments to the policy.

This Christmas, L&M City of Sanctuary is collecting unisex hats, scarves, and gloves to gift to asylum seekers and refugees at our annual Christmas party. Sign the NCVO & ACEVO Open Letter on Employer NICs
NCVO and ACEVO have released an open letter urging the Chancellor to protect charities from the upcoming increase in employer National Insurance Contributions (NICs), which could cost the sector £1.4 billion annually. Charities are already struggling with rising costs and increased demand for their services, and this added burden may lead to staffing cuts and service reductions. Join the call for urgent action—sign the letter and help safeguard the vital services charities provide to communities.

The Autumn Budget: NAVCA Policy Briefing
The Autumn Budget introduces key changes impacting the voluntary, community, and social enterprise (VCSE) sector. Highlights include a 6.7% rise in the National Living Wage to £12.21 from April 2025, and a 1.2% increase in employer National Insurance contributions, placing pressure on VCSE budgets. Support includes £1 billion for the Household Support Fund and a £22.6 billion NHS boost. However, cuts to the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and other funding reductions pose challenges. NAVCA pledges to advocate for sustained funding to support the sector amid rising costs.

New Citizens Advice Podcast Series
Citizens Advice North Lancashire have launched their brand new ‘Live Advice’ Podcast series. For the first time in its history the charity which offers free advice to people living in Lancaster and Morecambe is aiming to reach a new audience with a special ten-part podcast series.
Citizens Advice North Lancashire already offers face to face and online advice but hopes hearing from those involved in providing the service and some of those who have made use of it will help spread the word. CANL Chief Officer Joanna Young presents the podcast series alongside Rev Ian Dewar, lead chaplain for the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust and founder of the Bay Health Festivals.
Episode one deals with Illness and Death, and the team recorded a ‘Autumn Budget’ special which addresses the changes to the Winter Fuel Payment and urges listeners to check their eligibility for Pension Credit.

Living Well Together Across our District Community Conversation
How can we work together to create closer networks for living well together in Lancaster and Morecambe? Along with Lancaster City Council and Lancashire County Council, Lancaster District CVS is keen to:
- Explore our local communities
- Find our strengths
- Find new ways of building up good relationships
- Outline actions to take with partners and through winning funding
Action is needed everywhere to improve community connection and cohesion. Speakers at the event will include Yak Patel (Chief Officer, LDCVS), Mark Davies (Chief Executive, Lancaster City Council) and Rebecca Novell (Lancashire County Council)

Shaping the Civil Society Covenant: Have Your Say
ACEVO, NCVO, and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) are collaborating on a Civil Society Covenant to reset the relationship between civil society and government. This framework aims to recognise civil society’s independence and role in policy-making. It is based on four draft principles: Recognition, Partnership, Participation, and Transparency. Civil society leaders are encouraged to provide input via an online feedback form by 12 December 2024 and participate in November workshops.

Bookable Space Available at the Hobby Hub on Yorkshire Street
Andrew Galland, owner of the Hobby Hub on Yorkshire Street in Morecambe, is offering bookable slots for community organisations who wish to use the space for their meetings and activities.
The space will be available daily between 10am and 1pm, 2pm and 5pm, and 6pm and 9pm. Bookings must be made in blocks of four per month at a cost of £65 for all four sessions.

FREE LGBTQ+ Awareness Training
Lancashire LGBT is running two more LGBTQ+ awareness training sessions for people working in North Lancashire and South Cumbria. Lancashire LGBTQ+ will be running a session on Thursday 6th February at 10am-3.15pm in J365 Conference Centre, Crooklands LA7 7NU and an online session on Tuesday 11th March. There is no charge to attend this training.

Skilled Worker Visa Training
Learn how to employ a migrant under the Skilled Worker route, from obtaining a Certificate of Sponsorship, to be granted a Skilled Worker Visa. This half-day training workshop provides valuable insights on how to employ a migrant under the Skilled Worker route, from obtaining a Certificate of Sponsorship to be granted a Skilled Worker Visa.
During this workshop, you will receive training on various aspects of the Skilled Worker recruitment process, ensuring you have a thorough understanding of the procedures involved. Key topics covered include applying for Undefined COS, applying for Defined COS, assigning the COS, and navigating the application process for Prospective Employees Visa, both in-country and out-country applications. Additionally, you will gain insights into the process of applying for dependents of Prospective Employees Visa.

Youth Mental Health First Aid
Youth mental health first aid (YMHFA) is an internationally recognised two-day training course which teaches people how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health in young people and provide help on a first aid basis. This training will teach you the best way to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis. Learning takes place through a mix of group activities, presentations and discussions.
The course normally costs up to £300, but in this case is fully funded by Lancashire County Council Public Health and is free. However, delegates must pay a £50 deposit (plus £2.65 covering ticketing and payment fees charged by our suppliers) at the time of booking. Your £50 deposit will be repaid on completion of both full days.

Communicating Your Impact
Measuring the impact of your organisation not only helps you identify what’s working well and what needs to be improved, but is also essential when making funding bids, and when proving your value to existing funders.
Measuring impact can help ensure that the voluntary sector’s contribution to the economy is recognized and included in economic growth strategies.
This training programme will explain the business case for embedding impact measurement (the “why”); provide the theory behind the practice (the “what”) and share some very practical tools for getting started (the “how”).
By attending this training participants will develop:
- their understanding of impact measurement and the business case for it
- an outline theory of change setting out your activities and impact for stakeholders, funders, and partners
- an initial impact measurement framework that works for participants and their organisations.

The Peer Partnership Training Opportunities

Make Every Contact Count Train the Trainer – one day course
The MECC (Making Every Contact Count) Train the Trainer 1-day course equips staff from a range of sectors with the skills to engage in brief, effective conversations that promote healthy lifestyle choices. Targeted at those working in health, care, or the voluntary sector, this face-to-face course focuses on behaviour change around smoking, alcohol, diet, and more. Sessions are offered in Lancashire and South Cumbria from October to December 2024. Participants are expected to deliver six MECC sessions annually.

Think CO Zoom Workshops
The Think CO Programme continues to run free, hour-long online workshops every month with the current schedule taking us through to Christmas. They’ll let you know what CO is, its sources signs and symptoms, and how to prevent CO poisoning risks. They aim to make them as informative, engaging and as interactive as possible.

FREE Mental Wellbeing Training Courses

Trading for Good School for Social Entrepreneurs
The Trading for Good programme provides funding, education and support for social entrepreneurs and community businesses across England. Through this free programme you will learn from experts, and others like you, to grow your community business and you will also receive a Match Trade Grant of up to £4k to support you to develop trading income streams. This is a great opportunity to develop skills such as generating income, adapting to changing external environments and positively impacting your community.

Santa at Galloways Morecambe Christmas Grotto
Galloways’ annual Santa’s Grotto and Gift Wrap at Brew Me Sunshine on Victoria Street, Morecambe will be back from Monday December 2nd each Monday on the 9th and 16th from 11am to 3pm.
Santas are need for 2 to 4 hour shifts each day to be warm and friendly, offering gifts and listening to children and families Christmas Wishes. Staff will be on hand to support and a full induction and costume will be given to each volunteer.

Breast Cancer Now understand that a person’s need for support doesn’t end when treatment finishes. Their Moving Forward services and information are for anyone living with and beyond breast cancer, helping them approach life after treatment with increased confidence.
Community Connectors represent the organisation at local community events, give short talks to individuals and groups, engage the public, and record enquiries from the public.
Holiday Supporters help out during five-day holidays arranged for people living with dementia and their carer(s). Duties include meeting the holiday leader ast the location, supporting planned activities, assisting guests with tasks (but not personal care), helping out at meal times, and providing breaks for carers.

Volunteer Schools Speaker with The Faith & Belief Forum
The Faith and Belief Forum is a national interfaith charity who work in schools and across communities to build bridges, foster connection and provide anti-prejudice education. Friends of Lancaster Library Cafe
The Friends Of Lancaster Library (FOLL) cafe are planning to extend their weekly Wednesday cafe from a 1pm finish to a 4pm finish, with the aim of hosting a chatty cafe in the afternoon to help reduce social isolation as well as providing a welcoming space for other groups who might benefit from our donation only cafe.
The Cafe runs all year round from Lancaster Library.
FOLL are keen to encourage volunteers to get in touch if they are interested in volunteering on a Wednesday afternoon on a weekly basis to support this new initiative, no former cafe experience necessary as a full introduction will be given, no till handling involved.

Volunteer Caseworker at SSFA, The Armed Forces Charity
Caseworkers visit clients (those serving and those who save served in the forces, and their families) to work out what type of support they need. This could include things like securing funding for specialist equipment, home adaptions, benefits advice, finding work and more.

Opportunities for Volunteering from Home
Do you have any volunteering roles that can be done from home? We would like to increase the number of options that are available for people who either cannot, or would prefer not to, go out to volunteer.
This can include people with disabilities; people who are challenged by anxiety, depression, or other mental wellbeing issues; people with short-term illness or injury that prevents them from going out; people who are isolating because of some other health related issue; or perhaps just people who want to do something but would find it more convenient to work from home.
Roles that could be done from home could include things like administration, finance, social media, marketing and promotion, telephone befriending etc and often would only require minimal equipment, such as a computer and an internet connection.
Please contact [email protected] with your volunteering needs. We have volunteers waiting for home-based roles, so there is potential for a quick referral.

They provide trauma-informed counselling, peer support, and prevention services through community engagement and education. Get Ready for Winter
Lancashire County Council’s Health Protection Team are urging everyone to prepare for colder weather to stay safe and well this winter. Their ‘Get Ready for Winter’ campaign highlights that cold weather can negatively impact health, even at moderate temperatures (4–8°C). Vulnerable groups, such as older adults, young children, or those with health conditions, are particularly at risk.
Tips to stay healthy:
- Keep homes warm (18°C+) and maintain heating systems.
- Stay active, eat warm meals, and layer clothing.
- Practice good hand hygiene to avoid winter illnesses.
- Get recommended vaccines

DWP Disability Services support for SEND Schools, Colleges and Support Organisations
The DWP Disability Services Advocacy Team is hosting upskilling sessions for SEND schools, colleges, and support organisations to raise awareness of key disability benefits and grants, including Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Personal Independence Payment (PIP), and Access to Work (ATW). Sessions will focus on the transition from DLA Child to PIP at age 16 and how ATW can support employment transitions.

Sport and Dementia
On behalf of UCLan’s Alzheimer’s Academic Group, the University of Central Lancashire would like to invite you to our fourth Dementia public event that will be taking place in December with refreshments provided. This event is supported by the LIFE Institute.
The topic of discussion this time will be centered around contact sports and dementia. The aim of this event is to inform the public of potential risks of head injury from contact sport, while also hearing from the lived experiences of those affected either directly or indirectly by dementia.
Chaired by Prof. St. John Crean, you will be hearing from football manager David Moyes, daughter of former WBA, Notts County and England centre forward Jeff Astle who was diagnosed with dementia at only 55, Dawn Astle (Co-Founder of The Jeff Astle Foundation), and UCLan lecturer in physical education and sport, Dan Orwin.

RNIB Survey
RNIB’s latest survey is available to both blind and partially sighted men and women living in the UK, aged 16 years or over and is open until 20 December 2024. The survey will filter questions dependent on whether the person completing it is male or female. There are questions relating to people’s experiences of getting around, personal safety, employment, family, and relationships.
RNIB are keen to have representation from across the UK, from people of all ages, particularly those aged 16 to 34, and all ethnicities. So, if you are interested and fit the criteria, please complete this survey.
For anyone who is unable to complete an online survey, there is an option to call RNIB Helpline on 0303 123 9999 to register for future surveys. The advisor will gather information from the customer and when there is another survey, the customer will receive a call from one of our team to run through the questions.

Winter Advice from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service
Lancashire Fire and Rescue have been called to two fires in Chorley this week caused by reflective objects catching sunlight, like mirrors, snow globes and glass ornaments. They would like to share some advice on how you can help prevent fires:
Do:
- Store reflective items, like magnifying glasses and glass ornaments, away from windows, especially south-facing ones, or cover them when not in use.
- Be extra cautious in autumn and winter when the sun is lower.
Don’t:
- Place objects that can focus sunlight near windows or next to flammable materials.
- Forget to close internal doors when you leave home or at bedtime.
- By following these tips, you can help keep your home safe!

Men’s Health Festival
Come along to the Men’s Health Festival for a celebration of Community, Music, Food and Fitness at Hope Church this month. Enable: Supportive Community Activities for Long-Term Health Conditions
Enable offers a welcoming community for people with long-term health conditions through a variety of weekly activities. These include monthly meetings on the 1st Monday (10am-12pm) at Brew Me Sunshine in Morecambe, weekly coffee catch-ups on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays at various Morecambe cafés, and a wellbeing café every Tuesday (1pm-3pm) at Carnforth Free Methodist Church Hall. There’s also a monthly social meal on the 2nd Tuesday at The Dog and Partridge at 7pm.

Free Community Defibrillators Available from British Heart Foundation
The British Heart Foundation (BHF) has relaunched its Community Defibrillator Funding Programme, offering over 320 free defibrillator packages to UK communities. Priority will be given to areas with high need, especially those with limited access to existing defibrillators. Each package includes a defibrillator, cabinet, and coverage of installation costs, plus free replacement parts as needed.
Communities awarded a defibrillator will also have their device registered on The Circuit, the national defibrillator network, ensuring quick access for emergency responders. The BHF aims to improve survival rates for the 30,000+ out-of-hospital cardiac arrests each year, noting that early CPR and defibrillation greatly improve chances of survival.

Lancashire Warm Spaces Initiative – Directory & Small Grants
The Lancashire Warm Spaces Initiative aims to provide a local network of safe, warm, and welcoming places for individuals and families during the winter months. These spaces are designed to offer not only warmth but also a sense of connection and support.
Once again, an online directory will provide full details of spaces registered with the scheme.
Small grants are also available for community organisations to help them set up and run a warm space. The first round is now open, with more information available on the Lancashire Countil Council website.

The National Centre for Creative Health are circulating a Creative Health survey which aims to understand the range of organisations across England using creative and cultural activities to support health and well-being.

The Hero’s Guild – Dungeons & Dragons (The Gregson Health Support Programme)
Through collaborative storytelling and role-playing, you will embark on epic adventures while fostering a supportive community. You’ll rich narrative and problem-solving elements to promote mindfulness, resilience, and creativity. Each of the six sessions will encourage teamwork, empathy, and self-discovery, providing a fun yet meaningful escape from daily stresses. Basic familiarity with Dungeons and Dragons is essential to fully enjoy this six-part adventure. All dice and materials are provided- but feel free to bring your own!

Healing Harmonies at the Gregson (The Gregson Health Support Programme)
Healing Harmonies at The Gregson Community & Arts Centre is a singing group for ages 13+ of all abilities, focused on wellbeing and friendship. Led by the group, it offers a relaxed, supportive environment to enjoy feel-good songs and boost mental health. NEW CHATS Social Café
A new social Café launches today where they will be hosting an additional face-to-face meeting each month. The meetings are relaxed drop-in sessions to simply enjoy a brew and chat with other parents. CHATS (Carers. Help. Advisory. Training. Support) is a support group for parents / carers who have children or young people experiencing emotional or mental health difficulties. We run a local group on the second Thursday of the month 10am, at 13-17 Devonshire Road, Morecambe, LA3 1QT. The group also provide online support groups. The group was set up by parents in partnership with CAMHS for parents to get involved in helping develop children and young peoples mental health and be aware of services available. Sometimes all you need is to talk to other parents that get what you are going through!
The CHATS Social Café will be held on the first Friday of each month, 10am until 12pm at More Music, Morecambe.

Healthwatch Report: Who can help me?
This report details the findings of a Healthwatch project which explored the experiences of family members and carers who support people with a neurological disorder.
The feedback outlined in this report identified some of the barriers carers face and outlined a series of recommendations to which local commissioning bodies have provided their response.

Parent Wellbeing Group
NHS Blackpool Talking therapies are offering a new online group for parents in Blackpool, Lancashire and South Cumbria. The online sessions offer cognitive behavioural therapy focused information to help support and guide new parents through the challenges they face, learning new skills to enhance wellbeing and build on resilience.
The group is offered over six sessions lasting 90 minutes, and will run over eight weeks.

Cardiac Services Reconfiguration
The NHS Trusts in Lancashire and South Cumbria, along with the Integrated Care Board (ICB), are exploring improvements to cardiac services by adopting a network model. Integrated Care Communities (ICCs) are integrated teams of health and care workers, third sector organisations, statutory organisations and wider community assets. We work together with the aim to improve physical & mental health outcomes, promote wellbeing and reduce health inequalities.
In the Lancaster District we have 3 ICCs, Lancaster, Bay and Carnforth. Each hosts a monthly online networking meeting which is a great opportunity to meet new partners, find out what is happening locally and share updates of your own. Each ICC also has a Facebook page and a monthly newsletter that goes out far and wide.
If you aren’t available to go along to a meeting but have something to share – don’t worry! Jenny, our Community Health Officer, attends each ICC and is very happy to update the meeting on your behalf – sharing items of news or events that are coming up.

Coach Core Foundation is a UK charity that uses sport and apprenticeships to support young adults facing barriers to employment. Partnering with local employers, they create positive change in communities by training young role models to deliver sports and physical activities.

Ludus Dance in Back!
Ludus Dance is back with their Studio Training Programme every Tuesday during term-time at The Storey, Lancaster. They offer playful, creative contemporary dance classes for children aged 2-14, led by professional dancers. Three sessions are available: Bounce Blast (ages 2-5), Dance Blast (ages 5-9), and LYDC Juniors (ages 10-14). Your Pots 2024 – Project Videos
The Your Pots strand of the Pots of Possibility Fund provides grants of up to £10,000 for local projects that can help regenerate North Lancashire’s environment and build healthy thriving communities across our district. Grants are awarded after a public vote which creates recommendations about which projects should receive funding.
This year’s Your Pots Your Say Voting Day takes place on 16 November from 10:30am at The Storey (get your tickets here), and the eleven applicants have been working with CVS to create short videos which describe their projects and why they think it’s important that they receive a grant.
Anyone can take part in the Voting Day – take a look at the videos to find out about some amazing new project ideas and consider coming along to have your say.

Food Champion banner, badge, and bunting making
FoodFutures are delighted to be collaborating with Sewing Cafe Lancaster to run a series of workshops.
Come and learn how to create stunning badges from scrap fabric, and learn how to create banners and bunting using applique and other sewing techniques. The first two workshops will focus on learning skills and choosing what you want to make. The final workshop will be a co-creation exercise involving putting the finished pieces together to create a FoodFutures banner that can be used at events and markets.
These workshops are suitable for all skill levels. They will hopefully inspire you to create other works of art whether it’s up-cycling your clothes or making your party bunting.

Music with the Mayor gigs
The new Mayor of Lancaster, Cllr Abi Mills, has launched “Music with the Mayor,” a series of live music events celebrating local talent while raising funds for Citizens Advice North Lancashire. The initiative will feature various performances, including bands, choirs, and school groups, with upcoming events like a Christmas disco and a Burn’s night ceilidh. The project supports the charity’s work during the cost-of-living crisis and aims to engage the community through a diverse musical line-up across Lancaster and Morecambe.

The Cuisine Zines: Food-Inspired Zine Project
The Morecambe Community Riso Press has been awarded a Pots of Possibility grant to deliver a food-inspired zine-making project. The aim is to create a library of DIY zines focusing on food stories, recipes, and local food networks.
Five free workshops will take place at various locations from September 2023 to January 2024, where participants can explore zine-making, share food experiences, and contribute to the final Cuisine Zine. The project aligns with the Food Futures Good Food Manifesto, promoting sustainable and fair food practices across North Lancashire.
The workshops are free but booking is essential.
