Lancaster Guardian Column
Lancaster District CVS writes a column for the Lancaster Guardian every two weeks, which offers an opportunity for us to focus on anything and everything related to our sector and the work being done in communities across Lancaster. Whether it’s a good news story celebrating success, a call for volunteers, highlighting a project or need, or anything in between and beyond, we want to hear from you. What stories do you have that deserve attention? What do you want the people of Lancaster to read about?

The column must be 380-400 words so we need ideas and suggestions that would fill the space. Provide use with the information and we’ll write it up and submit it. Quotes from relevant people are always appreciated, and if you can also provide us with a decent photograph, the Lancaster Guardian will also put the column on their website (all columns appear on our own CVS website).

Have your say and help shape the future of the West End
We are delighted to be supporting the West End Morecambe Pride in Place consultation and we would like to encourage everyone with a connection to the area to share their views on what makes the West End special, what is working well, and where future investment could have the greatest impact.

Whether you’ve lived in the area for many years, recently moved here, work locally, volunteer, or regularly use local services and facilities, your experiences and ideas matter.

The consultation is seeking to understand:

  • What people value most about the West End
  • The strengths and assets already present within the community
  • What could be improved
  • Priorities for future investment and development

Your feedback will help inform future Pride in Place plans and help ensure local people are at the heart of shaping the area’s future.

Lancashire’s New Council Structures Confirmed
The Government today has confirmed that Lancashire’s Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) will proceed using a four-unitary council model, representing the biggest change to local government in Lancashire for more than 50 years.

Subject to Parliamentary approval, the current system of 15 councils (Lancashire County Council, Blackburn with Darwen, Blackpool, and the 12 district councils) will be replaced by four new unitary authorities. These new councils will be responsible for all local government services within their areas.

This letter from Lancashire County Council confirms the decision and outlines the next steps in the transition process.

While there will be no immediate changes to council services, all existing councils will continue to operate until 31 March 2028, with the new authorities formally coming into effect on 1 April 2028. Elections for shadow councils will take place in May 2027 to oversee preparations for the new arrangements.

For voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise organisations, this announcement provides greater certainty about the future local government landscape across Lancashire. Over the coming months and years, the new councils will begin shaping their priorities, partnership arrangements, commissioning approaches and engagement structures. This will create both challenges and opportunities for our sector.

At Lancaster District CVS, we will be monitoring developments closely and working with partners across Lancashire to ensure the voice of the sector is heard throughout the transition. We will continue to provide updates, briefings and opportunities for involvement as more information becomes available.

Key milestones include:

  • May 2027: Elections for “shadow councils” that will oversee preparations for the new authorities.
  • 1 April 2028: The new unitary councils formally come into operation.

We will keep our members informed as Lancashire’s Local Government Reorganisation journey progresses

Help People New to Work Realise Their Potential Through Work Experience
Could your organisation offer a work experience placement to someone looking for their first step into employment? Placements can last up to six weeks and could be based around an existing volunteer role or something more structured within your organisation.

Work experience can be genuinely life-changing. For many people, it provides their first opportunity to build confidence, routine, workplace skills and a sense of purpose in a supportive environment. It helps individuals discover strengths they may never have had the chance to demonstrate, while gaining real experience and evidence they can carry forward into future employment.

By offering a placement, organisations are not simply providing experience – they are helping people build confidence, connection and belief in their own potential.

If your organisation may be able to support someone with a placement opportunity, please contact Karen Radcliffe, Partnerships Manager for Lancaster and Morecambe, at [email protected].

Under 18 Volunteering
We’ve had a slowdown to our regular call for opportunities for under 18s to volunteer, but we continue to receive requests for roles for people between 14 and 17 years old, so if you have any roles for under 18s to support your organisation or project, please let us know.
Like the idea of involving under 18s but have concerns? Perhaps you’re worried about insurance, or safeguarding – whatever your question, let us know and we can support you to engage under 18s with your work.
We would love to be able to support these motivated and enthusiastic young people, so please get in touch with your ideas
Please email [email protected] with the details.

Opportunities for Volunteering from Home
Do you have any volunteering roles that can be done from home? We would like to increase the number of options that are available for people who either cannot, or would prefer not to, go out to volunteer.

This can include people with disabilities; people who are challenged by anxiety, depression, or other mental wellbeing issues; people with short-term illness or injury that prevents them from going out; people who are isolating because of some other health related issue; or perhaps just people who want to do something but would find it more convenient to work from home.

Roles that could be done from home could include things like administration, finance, social media, marketing and promotion, telephone befriending etc and often would only require minimal equipment, such as a computer and an internet connection.

Please contact [email protected] with your volunteering needs. We have volunteers waiting for home-based roles, so there is potential for a quick referral.

Volunteer Opportunity Promotion and Recruitment
Have you registered on our website to promote your volunteer roles? By adding your opportunities to our website you will be making them available to the hundreds of people per month who check our site looking for something to do. You will also enable our team to easily and quickly signpost people to your roles, to give them the information that they need to decide whether they would like to apply.

Registering is quick and easy and you can do it here.

Once registered you will be able to add your roles. If you need any help, or have any questions, you can contact Mark by email at [email protected]

In addition to the website, the Volunteer Centre can promote your roles via our bulletins and newsletters; through attendance at in-person events such as volunteer fairs; in 121 meetings with potential volunteers; through visits to various support organisations; drop-in events at local Job Centres; by posting to our social media platforms; and through our bi-weekly column in the Lancaster Guardian.

If you would like to discuss any of this, including having space in our Lancaster Guardian column, please contact Mark.

Volunteering Opportunity Help Guide
We have produced a guide to help you when adding an opportunity to our website – It is quite detailed and covers every possible question. You don’t need to follow it but please do look at it if you get stuck or if it isn’t clear which option to choose when going through the form to add new opportunities.

You can now also add more users to your account. Once registered, log in, hover on Account at the top of the dashboard and click ‘Users’, where you can add more users. This will be useful if you would like someone else to check applicant info and contact potential volunteers.

You can also now choose which category to add your opportunity under, to help people when searching for roles. If you can’t find an appropriate category, just use the ‘default’ category and let us know what categories you would like to see added.

DBS Checks
We offer a DBS check service, working in partnership with Burnley, Pendle, and Rossendale CVS. If you need DBS certificates for your staff or volunteers, please visit our website here.

Never leave batteries charging unattended or overnight, always use the correct charger, and only buy devices from reputable suppliers. If a battery becomes extremely hot, swollen, leaks, hisses or gives off a strong chemical smell, get everyone out of the property immediately and call 999.
