FestiVOL 2025 – Save the Date
We’re delighted to announce that FestiVOL 2025 – the annual celebration of the Lancaster district’s voluntary sector – will take place on Tuesday 18 November at Kings Church, Lancaster.

We’ll announce more details and booking information soon – but please do put the date in your diary!

Reflecting on REACH Morecambe Youth Festival 2025
What an extraordinary day it was at the REACH Morecambe Youth Festival – a celebration of energy, creativity, and youth voice in action. Over 100 young people from across Lancaster District came together to share their visions for a brighter future, exploring what it means to belong, to connect, and to thrive. Through workshops, performances, and honest conversations, they reminded us that change starts with relationships, community, and the courage to dream big.

With heartfelt thanks to our Young People Advisory Group, hosts Niyah and Daz, Morecambe FC Community Foundation, and the many partners, volunteers, and supporters who made the day possible, this festival showed the true power of collaboration. Most of all, it showed the power of young people leading the way – inspiring us all to build bridges, nurture opportunity, and create a district to be proud of.

The day was also the launch of RISE – Lancaster District Young People’s Foundation. This marks a new chapter for the district: a dedicated platform to champion youth voice, strengthen opportunities, and bring young people, communities, and organisations together to shape the future they want to see. Stay connected to find out more.

Shaping Education, Training, Health & Wellbeing Together
The Lancaster District is one of the largest in our county and also contains some of the most deprived wards. We’d like to know how we can create more opportunities for collaboration around improving health, wellbeing and incomes through education and training.

Over the past two years, Lancaster District Community and Voluntary Solutions and Lancaster and Morecambe College, supported by Lancaster City Council’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund, have worked together to deliver training and upskilling opportunities through the Community Learning Network.

Join us to discuss how we can increase our impact at a special event hosted by Lancaster and Morecambe College on 20 October – book here now.

By bringing opportunities directly into communities and places, the Network has begun to open new pathways to skills, employment and improved outcomes.

Our district is known for strong partnerships across sectors and communities, consistently achieving more by working together. We know that when we strengthen these partnerships, we build programmes that transform lives.

By connecting strategic priorities across sectors, we can make life-changing differences for residents.

We warmly invite you to join a roundtable discussion which will co-design the next stage of the Network, creating opportunities that raise aspirations across the Lancaster District.

Monday 20th October 2025
10:00am – 12:00pm, followed by lunch and networking
The Employers Hub, Lancaster & Morecambe College

Key insights & speakers: evidence and perspectives on the links between education, health, wellbeing, and place.

Development opportunities: explore practical ways we can work together to reduce inequalities and boost opportunities.

Networking and collaboration: connect with partners across the public sector, education, VCFSE organisations and communities.

We hope you can join us to help shape practical, collaborative solutions that make a real difference in Lancaster District. Whether that’s expanding community-based programmes, creating wellbeing initiatives that connect education and health, supporting young people into employment and training, or strengthening community venues as spaces for learning – we’d really appreciate your voice.

Overcoming Health Inequalities – Share your Stories
The theme for this year’s Festivol event in November (watch this space for a Save the Date coming soon) is how the VCFSE sector helps people overcome health inequalities they are facing.

With this in mind we are looking for beneficiaries to share their stories for a film we would like to make to illustrate this. We are looking for people who have directly benefitted from your organisations’ intervention and as a result their health inequality has reduced. We would love to chat to them and find out more and if they are happy to be involved film them sharing their story (this could be anonymous).

If you have anyone who you think fits the bill please get in touch with any of the Festivol Planning committee – Yak, Sharon, Jen, Jim and we’ll take it from there. Or email [email protected]

Community Collage Project – Organisations Required
As many of you will know Sarah Baines, Development Lead at the Lancaster Integrated Care Community (ICC) is leaving at the end of August. For many years Sarah has organised the Community Collage project across the district. The Community Collage Wellbeing project has been part of a the Bay Health Festivals. A local artist re-creates a template of a local landmark and then any individual/school/organisation/care home etc can have work together on one of the templates to create a beautiful collage that will be displayed in the Storey Institute. Members of the public can then vote on their favourite.

Sarah Baines is looking for organisations to take on this project in the future and keep it going. Work involved is: organising the artist to create the template, printing and distributing the templates to the groups, gathering them up and then creating a display at the Storey. Also involved is fundraising to pay for the materials and the hire of the Storey and also publicising the project.

If anyone is interested in continuing this work or partnering with others to make it happen please get in touch with our Community Health Officer, Jenny Reddell at [email protected] and we can take it from there.

Under 18 Volunteering
We’ve had a great response over the last few months to our call for opportunities for under 18s to volunteer, but we really want to widen participation as much as we can. So, if you have any roles for under 18s to support your organisation or project, please let us know.

Like the idea of involving under 18s but have concerns? Perhaps you’re worried about insurance, or safeguarding – whatever your question, let us know and we can support you to engage under 18s with your work.

We are still getting requests from parents and students looking for volunteering opportunities for people aged between 14 and 17, so if you’d like to offer them something, let us know.

Please email [email protected] with the details.

Opportunities for Volunteering from Home
Do you have any volunteering roles that can be done from home? We would like to increase the number of options that are available for people who either cannot, or would prefer not to, go out to volunteer.

This can include people with disabilities; people who are challenged by anxiety, depression, or other mental wellbeing issues; people with short-term illness or injury that prevents them from going out; people who are isolating because of some other health related issue; or perhaps just people who want to do something but would find it more convenient to work from home.

Roles that could be done from home could include things like administration, finance, social media, marketing and promotion, telephone befriending etc and often would only require minimal equipment, such as a computer and an internet connection.

Please contact [email protected] with your volunteering needs. We have volunteers waiting for home-based roles, so there is potential for a quick referral.

Volunteer Opportunity Promotion and Recruitment
Have you registered on our website to promote your volunteer roles? By adding your opportunities to our website you will be making them available to the hundreds of people per month who check our site looking for something to do. You will also enable our team to easily and quickly signpost people to your roles, to give them the information that they need to decide whether they would like to apply.

Registering is quick and easy and you can do it here.

Once registered you will be able to add your roles. If you need any help, or have any questions, you can contact Mark by email at [email protected]

In addition to the website, the Volunteer Centre can promote your roles via our bulletins and newsletters; through attendance at in-person events such as volunteer fairs; in 121 meetings with potential volunteers; through visits to various support organisations; drop-in events at local Job Centres; by posting to our social media platforms; and through our bi-weekly column in the Lancaster Guardian.

If you would like to discuss any of this, including having space in our Lancaster Guardian column, please contact Mark.

Volunteering Opportunity Help Guide
We have produced a guide to help you when adding an opportunity to our website – It is quite detailed and covers every possible question. You don’t need to follow it but please do look at it if you get stuck or if it isn’t clear which option to choose when going through the form to add new opportunities.

You can now also add more users to your account. Once registered, log in, hover on Account at the top of the dashboard and click ‘Users’, where you can add more users. This will be useful if you would like someone else to check applicant info and contact potential volunteers.

You can also now choose which category to add your opportunity under, to help people when searching for roles. If you can’t find an appropriate category, just use the ‘default’ category and let us know what categories you would like to see added.

DBS Checks
We offer a DBS check service, working in partnership with Burnley, Pendle, and Rossendale CVS. If you need DBS certificates for your staff or volunteers, please visit our website here.

Future of Social Prescribing Survey
The National Academy for Social Prescribing has launched a survey about the future of social prescribing in England, to help inform their new strategy, set to be released from 2026 onwards.

Recent research highlights that young people, men, and ethnic minorities are less likely to access social prescribing through medical routes. To truly unlock its potential, NASP want to strengthen community-led access—through self-referral, trusted local connectors, and culturally relevant services.

Community organisations are already doing incredible work – this is about ensuring they’re supported, visible, and central to the future of social prescribing.

Do you need help with harvesting or have surplus produce to donate? Would you like to volunteer for apple picking or vegetable gleaning? Do you need support hosting an event with your community group, or need to borrow extendable apple pickers, bike trailer or other harvesting tools? Do you have apples you’d like to get juiced?

Could you help host the FoodFutures Harvest Feast on Saturday 6 September?

Silent Approach
A one-act play based on real events, with post-show discussion.

When the treatment received in a secure unit would be considered assault in the outside world, can we really call it care?

In 2007, Rebecca House was a serving police officer with the Lancashire Constabulary. In the midst of a severe mental health breakdown, during which she tried to end her own life, she was arrested by her own colleagues in her own home.

She was then sectioned under The Mental Health Act with her parents tirelessly campaigning for her release.

Silent Approach – based on Rebecca’s book, Police To Paranoia – is the theatrical re-telling of her arrest, detainment, and her experiences at the hands of the professionals whose actions and decisions were to shape her future life and health

Through her Lancashire-based organisation S.I.S. Strength In Struggles, Rebecca works tirelessly to provide fee-free alternative therapies to those struggling with their mental health. Join Rebecca in the auditorium after the performance to answer your questions about her experience and discuss her organisation. Hel Spandler (editor of Asylum magazine) will also be involved in the post-panel discussion on the Friday.
