The Great Big Green Week

The Great Big Green Week is coming to North Lancashire! From 10-18 June, the climate action campaign known as the Great Big Green Week sees thousands of people across the UK organising local festivals and events.

Now in its third year, the campaign draws attention to climate change and destruction of the natural world, while also connecting these issues with local communities. People from all walks of life will be showcasing actions to tackle climate change and creating a better world, for us now and for future generations.

In Lancaster District, the Great Big Green Week will be run as North Lancashire Green Week, and runs from 10 to 25 June, giving us an additional 7 days! Local events already lined up include Lancaster’s Midsummer Market; a writing workshop; a nettle day at Backsbottom Farm; a wildflower walk; a lecture with Bill McGuire, Emeritus Professor of Geophysical and Climate Hazards, about the science behind his book ‘Hot House Earth’; a tour of Lancaster Cohousing; a celebration at Claver Hill Community Farm, and more. Most events will be free to attend and open to all, although some require prior registration.

The Midsummer Market in Lancaster’s city centre on 16th June will be a fun day out with local businesses, community groups, artists, and musicians. It will also be a chance for people to talk to the Closing Loops project team about the climate and nature emergency and what is happening locally to address it.

On 25th June, the writers group The Nib Crib invites people to join in a “Letters to tomorrow” writing workshop, as an opportunity to create a permanent record of their hopes, dreams and wishes for someone in the future. “Letters to tomorrow” is a chance to document our concerns, personal efforts and the real desire to preserve and improve our wonderful world.

More events are still being added to the programme and your group, organisation or business is welcome to be part of it, with anything from local walks and guided tours to community celebrations and workshops.

The Great Big Green Week is organised by The Climate Coalition, whose members include the National Trust, WWF, Women’s Institute, Oxfam, and RSPB. North Lancashire Green Week is coordinated by the Closing Loops project.
