WE CAN Builds Momentum for the Year Ahead
A huge thank you to everyone who joined the latest West End Community Action Network (WE CAN) meeting at the Alhambra in Morecambe. Marking a year since the network’s early conversations began, the session brought together residents, community groups and local organisations to reflect on progress, celebrate key milestones and focus on what comes next.
Through a red, amber, green prioritisation exercise, participants explored eight community themes including shared spaces, local activities, volunteering, housing, skills and community voice, helping to identify where energy and action can make the biggest difference. The meeting also welcomed Pride in Place Chair Helen Bingley OBE and Pride in Place Manager Sarah Newton, with discussions highlighting exciting opportunities for collaboration and a shared commitment to creating positive change in the West End.

Young People Help Shape Eden Project Morecambe Garden
Lancaster District CVS has been proud to support Eden Project Morecambe with a community garden project that is already helping local young people feel part of something much bigger than a build site on the promenade. Twenty young people from across the area were involved in designing and creating the garden from the ground up, gaining hands-on experience in horticulture, biodiversity, construction and teamwork while developing confidence, connection and pride in Morecambe’s future. The project was recently featured at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026 on BBC iPlayer, with young people from Morecambe attending alongside Lancaster District CVS Chief Officer Yak Patel. By all accounts it was an unforgettable experience, complete with a meeting with Angela Rippon and even a brush with Morecambe and Wise. A brilliant reminder that when investment in place is matched with investment in people, communities really do flourish.
Watch the segment on BBC iPlayer at 7:50 minutes.

Lancaster District CVS Shares Prevention Programme Impact with Integrated Care Board
Recently Lancaster District CVS attended the Integrated Care Board meeting to present alongside partners on the impact of the Adult Social Care Prevention Programme and what can be achieved when the Voluntary, Community, Faith and Social Enterprise sector is recognised as a genuine system partner. Developed collaboratively with Lancashire County Council and community organisations across the district, the programme was created in response to increasing numbers of people experiencing challenges that sat below statutory Adult Social Care thresholds, but were still having a profound impact on daily life including isolation, debt, housing pressures, caring responsibilities and wider wellbeing concerns.
The partnership approach introduced a trusted referral pathway, rapid community-based support and stronger relationships between Adult Social Care teams and local organisations already embedded within neighbourhoods. The result has been earlier intervention, improved wellbeing for residents, greater confidence in community pathways and fewer situations escalating into crisis. Importantly, the programme has also demonstrated the value of prevention and the crucial role community organisations play in helping people access the right support at the right time, while reducing avoidable demand on statutory services. A powerful example of what can happen when systems work together around people and communities rather than organisational boundaries.
Watch our Community Health Officer Jenny Reddell and Chief Officer Yak Patel present at the recent ICB Board meeting.

Lancaster Guardian Column
Lancaster District CVS writes a column for the Lancaster Guardian every two weeks, which offers an opportunity for us to focus on anything and everything related to our sector and the work being done in communities across Lancaster. Whether it’s a good news story celebrating success, a call for volunteers, highlighting a project or need, or anything in between and beyond, we want to hear from you. What stories do you have that deserve attention? What do you want the people of Lancaster to read about?
The column must be 380-400 words so we need ideas and suggestions that would fill the space. Provide use with the information and we’ll write it up and submit it. Quotes from relevant people are always appreciated, and if you can also provide us with a decent photograph, the Lancaster Guardian will also put the column on their website (all columns appear on our own CVS website).

Lancaster Community Fund – One Week Left
The first round of the Lancaster Community Fund for 2026/7, offered by Lancaster City Council in partnership with Lancaster District CVS, closes to applications on Sunday 5 June.
The Lancaster Community Fund was set up following the transfer of several charity funds which had been left to Lancaster City Council in bequests and endowments but over the years had fallen dormant. The fund will also distribute additional grants from Lancaster City Council, on an ad hoc basis.
The fund exists to support grassroots projects and initiatives that support one or more of its three priorities:
- Projects that increase community involvement or build community wealth or resilience
- Projects that contribute towards carbon reduction and a more sustainable district
- Projects that contribute to individual and community wellbeing
Grants of up to £1,000 are available. Applications are particularly welcomed for projects that support grassroots initiatives, for activities that will benefit disadvantaged areas of the community, or from organisations that haven’t recently received a grant from this fund.
Eligibility for funding and our guidance to applicants has changed this year, so we recommend that all organisations considering applying read the new guidance document, even if you’ve applied to the fund before.

Fundraising Regulators Issue Public Reminder
The Charity Commission and the Fundraising Regulator have today published new, joint guidance to help people who want to raise funds for charity. The regulators are advising members of the public to follow their latest guidance so that people can fundraise in a way that protects themselves and the charity they are raising money for. Each year, almost a third of sector income is raised from donations and legacies, including fundraising by the public. The guide sets out practical steps for anyone thinking about setting up a fundraising appeal, including in response to an emergency. It is important that people follow the guidance because, when someone decides to raise money for charity they, not the charity, are responsible for ensuring the money goes where intended.

Volunteers at Schoolread in Lancaster
Do you have an hour or two to spare each week? Could you support local children with their developing their reading skills?
Schoolreaders volunteers are matched with a local primary school where they visit weekly and listen to children read individually to help improve their reading and comprehension skills and also foster a love of reading. Reading for pleasure at a young age has a significant impact in how children are able to access their secondary education and also on their future life chances.
Volunteers need to be able to commit to weekly visits to their school, on a day and time that suits them within the school day, for at least a year (holidays and appointments can be taken during this time).

Help People New to Work Realise Their Potential Through Work Experience
Could your organisation offer a work experience placement to someone looking for their first step into employment? Placements can last up to six weeks and could be based around an existing volunteer role or something more structured within your organisation.
Work experience can be genuinely life-changing. For many people, it provides their first opportunity to build confidence, routine, workplace skills and a sense of purpose in a supportive environment. It helps individuals discover strengths they may never have had the chance to demonstrate, while gaining real experience and evidence they can carry forward into future employment.
By offering a placement, organisations are not simply providing experience – they are helping people build confidence, connection and belief in their own potential.
If your organisation may be able to support someone with a placement opportunity, please contact Karen Radcliffe, Partnerships Manager for Lancaster and Morecambe, at [email protected].

Opportunities for Volunteering from Home
Do you have any volunteering roles that can be done from home? We would like to increase the number of options that are available for people who either cannot, or would prefer not to, go out to volunteer.
This can include people with disabilities; people who are challenged by anxiety, depression, or other mental wellbeing issues; people with short-term illness or injury that prevents them from going out; people who are isolating because of some other health related issue; or perhaps just people who want to do something but would find it more convenient to work from home.
Roles that could be done from home could include things like administration, finance, social media, marketing and promotion, telephone befriending etc and often would only require minimal equipment, such as a computer and an internet connection.
Please contact [email protected] with your volunteering needs. We have volunteers waiting for home-based roles, so there is potential for a quick referral.

You can now also add more users to your account. Once registered, log in, hover on Account at the top of the dashboard and click ‘Users’, where you can add more users. This will be useful if you would like someone else to check applicant info and contact potential volunteers.
You can also now choose which category to add your opportunity under, to help people when searching for roles. If you can’t find an appropriate category, just use the ‘default’ category and let us know what categories you would like to see added.
