The James Bond / Henry Welch Trust
Grants are available for adults who suffer from chest or lung conditions and need financial support.
The James Bond / Henry Welch Trust makes grants using income from endowments created in the early twentieth century to benefit people who at the time were referred to as “consumptives”.
Today, the Trust supports people with chest or lung conditions such as COPD, asthma, pneumonia and lung cancer. Grants go towards buying equipment or services that help those people live better lives.
Lancaster District CVS helps the Trust in this work by promoting and managing their grant-making process.
Who can receive a grant?
Grants are made to people that:
- live in the Lancaster district,
- have a chest or lung condition of any kind,
- would benefit from equipment or services that help their condition, but
- cannot afford it themselves.
The Trust must give preference to applications from people living in the city of Lancaster itself, but is able to consider applications from people living anywhere in the Lancaster City Council area (see this map for the boundaries).
There is no minimum or maximum grant and people can benefit from the fund more than once.
What could a grant pay for?
Anything that has a positive impact on the health and daily life of an eligible individual by helping them to manage their chest or lung condition, including:
- Humidifiers or dehumidifiers
- Occupational health assessments
- Cost of prescriptions, energy, water or travel
- Mobility aids
- Medical equipment not covered by the NHS
- Replacement of furniture or furnishings
This isn’t a complete list and there are more suggestions in the guidance document. Requests will be considered for any equipment or services that achieve the fund’s purpose.
How do I apply?
Applications are invited from individuals who need support, or from somebody else acting on their behalf. This could be someone with medical or financial power of attorney, or a professional such as a health care worker, a social worker, or a community centre support worker.
The easiest way to apply is to use our online system. You’ll need to create an account, after which you can save and return to your application any number of times before submitting it for consideration.
Alternatively, you can download and print a paper copy of the form. You can also telephone us on 01524 555900 or email [email protected] to request a form in the post.
Our formal guidance document tells you all about the process.
No matter which method you use, you’ll need to provide some information about your chest or lung condition, the cost of the equipment or service you’d like to buy, and how this will make a difference to your health. You’ll also need to send us some documents – there’s more information about these in our guidance document.
How can I get help with my application?
If you have questions about the Trust or how to apply, you may find that our formal guidance document has the answer.
You can also telephone us on 01524 555900 or email [email protected] and we’ll do our best to answer your questions. Nick Smith (Operations Manager) and Sharon Phillips (Development Officer) are the members of staff at Lancaster District CVS assigned to support the James Bond / Henry Welch Trust.
What happens next?
Once we’ve received your paper application or you’ve submitted your online application, we’ll send you a receipt to confirm that we have it.
Lancaster District CVS will check your application and may get in touch with you if they feel that there is any information missing that would help the Trust make its decision.
Trustees meet regularly to review applications and make decisions, so you’re unlikely to wait more than four weeks to hear the result, although it could be much quicker.
If your grant is approved, we’ll write to you to confirm this and to tell you when you should expect to receive the funds. Later on, we’ll get back in touch to see if you’d like to tell the Trust about how the grant made a difference.
Alternatively, the Trustees may decide to refuse a grant or to ask you to send more information. Again, we’ll write to you to let you know.
