Government Published Consultation on the use of Dormant Assets
The government’s consultation paper published several weeks ago proposes Community Wealth Funds as a possible beneficiary which might share in the nearly £740m which the expanded dormant assets scheme will generate for projects in England. The conception of a Community Wealth Fund is that it would provide support and funding to reinvigorate social infrastructure in ‘left behind’ neighborhoods; providing long-term, patient investment over 10-15 years directly to these neighborhoods, with local people taking the lead in making decisions about how to use the funds to improve their areas and the prospects of their communities.

There is an opportunity for your organisation to respond to this via an online questionnaire.

The consultation is open until midnight on Sunday October 9th

Rapid Evidence Review of Community Initiatives
DCMS commissioned Frontier Economics to explore how community initiatives can deliver community infrastructure effectively and enhance social capital.

Key conclusions were:

  • Community infrastructure provides a place in which people can meet and, in some cases, is a focal point of the local area. It is important for a community to thrive – but it is not enough on its own.
  • For community infrastructure to be effective in supporting a community to thrive, it needs to be used to build community networks and relationships – and this is often led by activity organisers or community-based institutions.
