Nominate a Local Hero – Volunteer Achievement Awards Deadline This Sunday

This week’s column is, I’m afraid, a shameless plug for our upcoming Volunteer Achievement Awards! The deadline for nominations is this coming Sunday, 18th May, and you can nominate someone. Yes, you! So many people across our communities volunteer – whether they turn up week in, week out at a charity shop, or they pop to the shops for a neighbour in need, it all counts. Inspiring people are right on our doorsteps, often in our own homes. Maybe it’s you!

The Volunteer Achievement Awards is an opportunity to thank and recognise those people who do for others, so if you know a volunteer, if you know someone who goes out of their way to help other people or the community or the environment – whatever it is they do – we have a category for them and we would love for you to tell us all about them.

To nominate you just need to tell us about the volunteer, what they do, and why they should win an award. It’s a simple as that. We’ve created a simple online form with just a handful of questions and it takes no more than 10 minutes to complete. Anything and everything counts, so long as they volunteer in Lancaster district, whether that’s in the city or in Morecambe or Heysham or Carnforth, anywhere in the district boundary.

You can nominate someone for Volunteer of the Year, or Young Volunteer of the Year if they’re under 25, and these are for people who’ve gone above and beyond. Trustee of the Year is for someone who has proven themselves on the board of an organisation, managing and steering a project to success. Fundraiser of the Year is for someone who has raised vital funds. Lifetime Achievement is for someone who has dedicated years of their life to a cause of multiple causes. Environment Hero is for someone who loves our natural world and works to protect it. Wellbeing Champion is for someone who supports others to live healthy lives. And the Roger Sherlock Community Inspiration Award is for those people in our communities who inspire through their dedication and hard work, those people who just get stuck in because they see that something needs doing so they do it.

Head on over to our Volunteer Awards 2025 page to find out more about the awards and how to submit a nomination.
