Young People Help Shape Eden Project Morecambe Garden
Lancaster District CVS has been proud to support Eden Project Morecambe with a community garden project that is already helping local young people feel part of something much bigger than a build site on the promenade. Twenty young people from across the area were involved in designing and creating the garden from the ground up, gaining hands-on experience in horticulture, biodiversity, construction and teamwork while developing confidence, connection and pride in Morecambe’s future. The project was recently featured at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026 on BBC iPlayer, with young people from Morecambe attending alongside Lancaster District CVS Chief Officer Yak Patel. By all accounts it was an unforgettable experience, complete with a meeting with Angela Rippon and even a brush with Morecambe and Wise. A brilliant reminder that when investment in place is matched with investment in people, communities really do flourish.

Lancaster District CVS Shares Prevention Programme Impact with Integrated Care Board
Recently Lancaster District CVS attended the Integrated Care Board meeting to present alongside partners on the impact of the Adult Social Care Prevention Programme and what can be achieved when the Voluntary, Community, Faith and Social Enterprise sector is recognised as a genuine system partner. Developed collaboratively with Lancashire County Council and community organisations across the district, the programme was created in response to increasing numbers of people experiencing challenges that sat below statutory Adult Social Care thresholds, but were still having a profound impact on daily life including isolation, debt, housing pressures, caring responsibilities and wider wellbeing concerns.
The partnership approach introduced a trusted referral pathway, rapid community-based support and stronger relationships between Adult Social Care teams and local organisations already embedded within neighbourhoods. The result has been earlier intervention, improved wellbeing for residents, greater confidence in community pathways and fewer situations escalating into crisis. Importantly, the programme has also demonstrated the value of prevention and the crucial role community organisations play in helping people access the right support at the right time, while reducing avoidable demand on statutory services. A powerful example of what can happen when systems work together around people and communities rather than organisational boundaries.
Watch our Community Health Officer Jenny Reddell and Chief Officer Yak Patel present at the recent ICB Board meeting.

So What? Measuring Impact Swop Shop
Join us for the next Swop Shop Skill Share Network session, where we’ll be exploring one of the biggest questions in our work:
What difference are you actually making – and how do you show it?
This interactive session will focus on the “so what?” element of impact—moving beyond activity counts and looking at how we understand and evidence real change for people and communities.
As always, Swop Shop is about shared learning and peer support. We’ll kick off with a short input from Michael Kohl, Founding Manager from West End Impact providing us with an insight into how they use qualitative and story-based measuring. The rest of the session will be dedicated to discussion, idea-swopping, and learning from each other’s experiences.
Through informal table discussions and shared learning, we’ll look at:
- Using impact reports, case studies and storytelling to bring impact to life
- Distance travelled tools and other practical ways to measure change
- The basics of a Theory of Change – linking what you do to the difference you make
- What works (and what doesn’t!) when measuring impact in real-world settings
This is a great opportunity to share your own approaches, ask questions, and pick up ideas you can take straight back to your organisation.
Who is it for?
This session is open to anyone working or volunteering in the voluntary, community or public sectors who is interested in:
- Demonstrating impact
- Improving evaluation approaches
- Learning from others in a supportive environment
Whether you’re new to impact measurement or have established systems in place, your experience will add value to the conversation. Please bring examples of methods and impact measurement tools that you are using to share with colleagues.
Tuesday 2nd June
3.00pm – 5.00pm
West End Impact, 4–10 Heysham Road, Morecambe, LA3 1DG
Book here – https://www.trybooking.com/uk/GMBB
Come along, share your experiences, and leave with practical ideas, tools and connections to help you better capture and communicate the difference you make

Lancaster Guardian Column
Lancaster District CVS writes a column for the Lancaster Guardian every two weeks, which offers an opportunity for us to focus on anything and everything related to our sector and the work being done in communities across Lancaster. Whether it’s a good news story celebrating success, a call for volunteers, highlighting a project or need, or anything in between and beyond, we want to hear from you. What stories do you have that deserve attention? What do you want the people of Lancaster to read about?
The column must be 380-400 words so we need ideas and suggestions that would fill the space. Provide use with the information and we’ll write it up and submit it. Quotes from relevant people are always appreciated, and if you can also provide us with a decent photograph, the Lancaster Guardian will also put the column on their website (all columns appear on our own CVS website).

A new report from Voluntary Sector North West brings together voices from across the North of England, exploring how the VCFSE sector is working alongside combined authorities. We’re proud that our Chief Officer has been part of this process, contributing insight and experience from our district into the wider Northern conversation.
Fresh guidance from the Charity Commission is a timely reminder that social media is a powerful tool for charities when used well, but it needs steady hands on the wheel. The update encourages organisations to put clear policies in place, stay on top of legal duties and think carefully about risk, especially when engaging on emotive issues or managing public interaction. It’s all about balancing reach with responsibility so that every post supports the charity’s purpose and protects the people it serves.

Help People New to Work Realise Their Potential Through Work Experience
Could your organisation offer a work experience placement to someone looking for their first step into employment? Placements can last up to six weeks and could be based around an existing volunteer role or something more structured within your organisation.
Work experience can be genuinely life-changing. For many people, it provides their first opportunity to build confidence, routine, workplace skills and a sense of purpose in a supportive environment. It helps individuals discover strengths they may never have had the chance to demonstrate, while gaining real experience and evidence they can carry forward into future employment.
By offering a placement, organisations are not simply providing experience – they are helping people build confidence, connection and belief in their own potential.
If your organisation may be able to support someone with a placement opportunity, please contact Karen Radcliffe, Partnerships Manager for Lancaster and Morecambe, at [email protected].

Celebrating Volunteers 2026 – Last Chance!
If you have not already requested a certificate for your volunteers, you only have until this Sunday to do so! Our Volunteer Achievement Awards ceremony isn’t until June 2027, but we can’t let 2026 go by without doing something, so we decided to celebrate and thank volunteers with some special certificates.
If you would like a volunteer (or a whole team) to receive a certificate, please complete this form. We just need their name, the name of the organisation they volunteer for, and where you’d like the certificate to be sent. If they don’t volunteer formally, but help out in their community just as themselves, you can say that too.
We will aim to get certificates out to people before Volunteers’ Week in June so we’ll need your requests by midnight on Sunday 24 May.

Volunteer Treasurer with Read Easy Lancaster & Morecambe Bay
Read Easy Lancaster and Morecambe Bay is looking for a volunteer Treasurer to join their local Management Team.
Read Easy provides free, confidential, one-to-one reading coaching for adults who struggle with reading. The local group helps adults improve their reading skills, giving them more confidence, independence and new opportunities in everyday life.
The Treasurer plays an important role in helping the group run smoothly. You would oversee the group’s finances, keep clear records, manage payments, and help the Management Team understand what the group needs to raise and spend to support its activities.
This is a manageable role for someone with a head for figures and a careful, organised approach. For most Read Easy groups, the accounts are modest, with probably no more than 50 transactions a year. The role usually takes around one hour a week, although it may take a little longer while the group is setting up.

Today, the Trust supports people with chest or lung conditions such as COPD, asthma, pneumonia and lung cancer. Grants go towards buying equipment or services that help those people live better lives.
Find out more at www.lancastercvs.org.uk/jbhw. You may wish to consider promoting this opportunity in your community and with people that you support.
