Unlocking Well-being: A Guide to Social Prescribing in the Lancaster District
- On
You might have heard the term ‘social prescribing’, you may even have read about it in one of our previous columns, but it is surprising how many people still aren’t quite sure what it is or how it works. In celebration of National Social Prescribing Day on the 19th of March, we are pleased to present this short guide to social prescribing.
Social prescribing connects people to non-medical support within their communities, addressing a wide range of needs and promoting overall well-being. Whether it’s joining a community gardening project, participating in an art class, or receiving support for managing financial stress, social prescribing can transform lives by linking people to activities and services that improve their health and well-being.
A key resource in this process is the Lancaster Digital Directory. Accessible at directory.lancastercvs.org.uk, this online tool helps you find essential services provided by community groups, the NHS, and local authorities. It lists groups, classes, activities, and advice sessions covering health, fitness, mental well-being, financial support, food provision, employment, and more.
Additionally, the Food Futures strategy plays a crucial role in supporting social prescribing initiatives. Food Futures envisions a thriving local food system that is healthy, resilient, and fair for North Lancashire. By integrating social prescribing into their community food strategy, Food Futures aims to improve health and well-being through activities such as growing food, gardening, and connecting with nature. These initiatives not only promote physical health but also foster social connections and mental well-being, aligning with the holistic approach of social prescribing.
We are also excited to announce our collaboration with Lancaster Green Spaces. Over the coming months and years, we will work closely with Lancaster Green Spaces members to help groups embrace the world of social prescribing. This partnership will support community groups in creating and maintaining green spaces that promote health and well-being, further enhancing the impact of social prescribing in our community.
As we mark National Social Prescribing Day, we encourage you to explore the potential of social prescribing within your group or organisation, or as an individual. Hopefully you understand the concept, and Jenny Reddell, Community Health Officer at Lancaster District CVS, can help you to identify opportunities for social prescribing, and provide the necessary tools and resources to support your efforts. You can contact Jenny by email at [email protected]. Together, we can create healthier, more connected communities.
