Information and Advice for the Lancaster District’s Third Sector – 13 September 2024
- On
Our weekly Bulletin is full of useful information. It’s one of the ways that LDCVS supports you to support your communities.
An archive of previous editions can be found here.
Before you read this week’s edition, help us to help you by telling us about practical actions you think we could take as a CVS and as a sector to improve transport options that provide an alternative to cars. Everyone can answer, no matter what you do in your organisation.
Click headings below to expand each section.
We Asked, You Said: Practical Action to Improve our Local Environment
In response to our earlier question about making a wish to improve the Lancaster district, many people responding told us that they’d choose to improve our local environment. Following up, we asked you to turn away from wishes and tell us about practical actions we could take as a CVS and a sector to help achieve this aim.
You told us that collectively we could:
- Study and respond to the Our Food Futures strategy and sign up to the Good Food Manifesto.
- Convene an event which shares information about and between initiatives already taking action to improve the environment, and find out more about what specific action the community would like to see.
- Encourage people to reduce, reuse, repurpose and recycle so that they can take individual action.
- Build relationships with private sector organisations who would like to find opportunities to expand their social responsibility activity.
- Encourage our staff and volunteers to travel in more sustainable ways, recycle and reuse in our premises, and save energy where possible.
- Develop a focused bootcamp event around setting up a group, finding easy to access funding, and launching new initiatives.
- Commit to having more pollinating plants on our premises and cutting the grass less often.
- Engage with Lancaster Civic Vision’s The Street Are Ours project which meets monthly to weed and litter pick around the city. People interested in joining can contact Peter Wilshire by email at [email protected]
- Make unloved spaces greener through planting. Ros Jones is part of working group interested in setting up a nature festival and achieving additional planting – contact her by email at [email protected] for more information.
It was really inspiring to see these responses, particularly as they not only provided ideas for future initiatives but also some really practical information about things that are taking place right now. Thanks to everyone who took the time to write in.

New Pro Bono Economics report highlights skills gaps and financial instability in charity sector
A new report, “Treatment for the Charity Sector’s Unhealthy Status Quo”, has been produced by Pro Bono Economics in collaboration with Nottingham Trent University’s VCSE Data and Insights National Observatory. This report highlights the critical challenges facing charities across the UK.
Key findings:
- Recruitment Difficulties: 40% of charities are struggling to fill 57% of their vacancies. This is severely limiting charities’ ability to meet the increasing demand for their services. Without more investment in training and development, charities will continue to struggle to adopt the digital technologies and innovations needed to enhance service delivery.
- Financial Strain: Despite signs of improvement in the wider economy, the charity sector continues to grapple with a flawed funding model. 32% of charities expect their financial situation to worsen in the coming months, with a further 35% expecting stagnation. As a result, 1 in 5 charities have cut back on their services, even as demand continues to surge.
- Impact on Services: 70% of charities expect an increase in demand for their services over the autumn, with 1 in 3 fearing they will be overwhelmed. This is particularly concerning as many charities have already had to reduce or ration services due to financial pressures.
The report makes the case for the government to extend the remit of the newly established Skills England body to include the charity sector. By doing so, we can help bridge the skills gap and ensure that charities are better equipped to meet the growing needs of the communities they serve.

Opportunities for Volunteering from Home
Do you have any volunteering roles that can be done from home? We would like to increase the number of options that are available for people who either cannot, or would prefer not to, go out to volunteer.
This can include people with disabilities; people who are challenged by anxiety, depression, or other mental wellbeing issues; people with short-term illness or injury that prevents them from going out; people who are isolating because of some other health related issue; or perhaps just people who want to do something but would find it more convenient to work from home.
Roles that could be done from home could include things like administration, finance, social media, marketing and promotion, telephone befriending etc and often would only require minimal equipment, such as a computer and an internet connection.
Please contact [email protected] with your volunteering needs. We have volunteers waiting for home-based roles, so there is potential for a quick referral.

We have produced a guide to help you when adding an opportunity to our website – It is quite detailed and covers every possible question. Lancaster District Directory – Technical Update
I wanted to take this opportunity to give organisations and users a quick update on an bug relating to location information on the Lancaster District Directory, and a new feature which should make searching for services even easier.
Location Information
There is currently an issue with displaying location information associated with services across all implementations of the Access Elemental Marketplace directory – not just in the Lancaster District. The search results table and individual listings currently show “No location information available” for all services.
This issue has been reported to the site developers and is being investigated, so I expect it to be resolved soon. In the meantime, all the rest of your service information including times, contact details, website addresses and images display as normal.
Filter by Activity Type
The search function on the site now allows you to filter by type of activity, as well as searching by keyword and displaying results in order of their distance from a postcode.
An example of this kind of search would be selecting Children & Young People from the activity type filter, and then searching using the word ‘singing’. The results are then cut down to a more manageable list, which is particularly beneficial for users who have some really specific things they’re looking for.
To make this filter as effective as possible I’m working to cut down the number of activity types so that the filter process can produce meaningful results. I’ll be carrying this out over the next few weeks so please bear with me. As always I really welcome feedback and new ideas.
If you ever have any problems, want to tell us about ideas for improvements or new features, or know about services you’d like us to include, please do get in touch with me directly by email at [email protected]
I’m also very happy to come along to your group and talk to your staff, volunteers and members about how to make the most of this resource.
Thanks very much!

Community Mental Health Transformation Survey
As the ICB moves to the second phase of the Community Mental Health Transformation programme, they are keen to engage with and listen to people who are involved in delivering care for people with complex mental health needs, whichever organisation they might work for.
This engagement work is intended to provide information which helps to build local plans with defined transformational priorities, building on the work already being undertaken by colleagues within the VCFSE sector to capture experiences of local people.
As a first stage, a short survey is being circulated, which includes the opportunity to leave contact details if you wish to be included in future engagement activity.

Stay Connected with Your Integrated Care Community (ICC)
Integrated Care Communities (ICCs) are integrated teams of health and care workers, third sector organisations, statutory organisations and wider community assets. We work together with the aim to improve physical & mental health outcomes, promote wellbeing and reduce health inequalities.

Each ICC also has a Facebook page and a monthly newsletter that goes out far and wide.
If you aren’t available to go along to a meeting but have something to share – don’t worry! Jenny, our Community Health Officer, attends each ICC and is very happy to update the meeting on your behalf – sharing items of news or events that are coming up.

Talking to Young People about Vaping
In partnership with trading standards, Lancaster police conducted test purchases at vape shops in Lancaster and Morecambe. Several premises were found selling vapes to under-18s, leading to enforcement actions.
Police and the NHS have explained that It’s crucial that young people understand vaping is intended for adults to quit smoking, not for non-smokers or youth. Vaping is less harmful than smoking but not risk-free, as it exposes users to toxins and nicotine, which is especially harmful to developing brains. In the UK, selling vapes to under-18s is illegal, and some disposable vapes may not meet safety standards.
Young people can find out more on the FRANK website.
